My Trip to China (Updated on 2nd page)

Unfortuately half of those buildings will start to fall apart in a few years. Someone reported that the bird's nest have concret parts falling apart due to poor material when the entire structure is suppose to be steel... hmm.. just food for thought

Kind off skeptical about that. Sounds to me just another, Made in China = crap...trolls.

Yup! I been to China, seriously none of those mention ever happen. It just that the big cities are definitely too crowded.

The bird nest was inspected by international Olympic commitee. If its that crap, it will definitely make into headline and a big fuss of it. None ever happen.

I can hardly see anyone in the first few photoes

TUP, tell us how crowded/uncrowded the HSR is when you come back on! It'd be nice to get a first hand account from a normal person (as opposed to all the economists and "experts" on China who've written about it etc)

I took the HSR from suzhou to shanghai (about 30min ride) and it was almost full. It was entirely full on my trip from Hefei to Suzhou (2.5hrs) which is depicted in the picture. The point is, although everyone knows that there are certain issues with the system, they either feel that lightning doesnt strike the same spot twice, or that there is simply lack of better alternatives.

As for the lack of people in the Universiade pictures, the buildings were fenced off for some reconstruction, so no one could get in, u can actually see the fences in some of my pictures

Ever been to Detroit, MI or Cleveland, OH? When you do let me know what you think. Believe me most of the so call newer shopping centers in suburban American cities are made to last for only 30 years max not because of the structure, but of the materials use to cover the exterior of the building envelope (think of it as a skin of the building) are made of E.I.F.S. (Exterior Insulation and Finishing System) cheap styro foam stucco plaster onto a plastic mesh and painted on that made to look like concrete blocks. Next time if anyone ever gone into a new shopping center (not malls) go ahead and flick your fingers on the wall and see how light it feels, that's what E.I.F.S. is. It's a way for developers to cut cost on labor and materials. When the age of the building reach its peak, they just bull doze it and build another one.

WE call that insuclad over here, and its very much fallen out of favour, because of the leaky home syndromes. If they use the same stuff for apartment buildings in China, then some of the investors who are quite prepared to leave them empty, could be in for a bit of a shock.

From my personal experience I have seen one particular Chinese University - Guangzhou (Sun Yat Sen) University in Guandong when I conducted some Seminars for post-graduate students. This Uni is very BIG with 5 campus spread throughout the Province. The main Uni @ Guangzhou is lovely with beautiful (very old) and well-built modern buildings. The Uni has a hugh student body all busy & with heavy human traffic. I suppose Shenzhen Universiade could be similar. Not fair to judge only by looking at photos or hearsay. Visit the place & then comment would be better.

Oh my God I hope you're right. As a practicing architectural designer, I HATE that stuff! Some of my client even wants houses to be built out of it, just because it's common practice.

The Universiade is a sporting event like Red Moon said, it is like the Olympics for university students. It just ended by the time I got to Shenzhen.
