and as far as i know the rescue team hasn't reached wenchuan county yet.

I was rather surprised that they even tried to airdrop paratroopers into the region considering it was almost night time, there was a storm, and the mountainous terrain. airdropping would be crazy in my opinion...
According to XINHUA, now about 800 military personals arrived in Wenchuan. There were three teams arrived by walking. One led by the commander of the Sichuan provincial military district Gen. Xia Guofu, one led by the vice commander Gen. Li Yazhou, another let by the commander of 13th army Gen. Li Yong.

You're right, Beichuan is actually some 50 miles away from the actual epicenter, which is located at Wenchuan county. I heard the first batch of PLA troops just arrived at Wenchuan, and the air force is considering drop paratroopers to the region(very dangerous under such condition indeed) within hours. I heard Premier Wen Jiabao said they have now mobilized more than 100,000 troops, if true I believe this is the biggest troop deployment for PLA in decades.

XINHUA just reported 15 paratroopers just successfully landed and reported to the headquarter. Others are probably still in the plane.

A PLA black hawk landed on the top of a hill for rescue mission.
Looking at the low clouds & mountains in the background, doesn't look much like ideal condition for air drop of either rescuers or materials does it ?

The town of Beichuan is one of dozens devastated by the quake, 7.8 on the Richter scale, whose death toll is only slowly coming to light as heavy rain and destroyed roads have prevented access to the worst afflicted areas until now. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao flew down to the stricken area hours after the disaster and has remained on site speaking to the afflicted, including those still trapped in rubble and has postponed all official engagements to concentrate on leading disaster relief as the official death toll creeps past the 15,000 mark

As help began to arrive in some of the hardest-to-reach areas, some victims trapped for more than two days under collapsed buildings were still being pulled out alive. The official death toll rose Wednesday to 14,866, Xinhua said, but it was not immediately clear if that number included the 7,700 reported dead in Yingxiu. In Sichuan province alone, another 25,788 people were buried and 1,405 were missing, provincial vice governor Li Chengyun said, according to Xinhua

The number of deaths in the earthquake in southwestern China climbed to 15,000 with thousands more still buried under rubble. Rescue workers continued to search for survivors and carried a victim out of the rubble in Mianzhu, in Sichuan Province. The Chinese government also reported that nearly 400 dams may have been damaged by the earthquake, and soldiers were sent to plug cracks in one upriver from Dujiangyan.

I just checked the news, and the death toll suddenly jumped to 50,000 after rescue workers reached towns near the epicenter.

    Re: Chinese Earthquake Photos!!

the problem is that those who are buried are unlikely to survive after 3 days without water. Therefore, we have reached a point where the survival rate for them is very slim, and in a few more days, the confirmed death toll will jump (probably to more than 50k)because of all the buried will be confirmed dead.
