It's apparent to me that China needs a major review or revision of it's laws re guarding safety. If there are any. weekly I read about the horrific accidents in China. No safety = tragedy. What about any of you members that have visited or lived in China? Is not safety a part of the culture? I'm always surprised that despite the number of hits on thsi thread there's is little response to the accidents. Betcha if it was an PLAAF aircraft crash and any non Chinese stated anything negative about the crash there would be a fire storm of statements. C'mon gents....What up with safety laws in general in China? What's up?.

School bus accident kills 19 in NW China - China News - SINA English

I don't think that chinese people care less about their safety of that of their children than their western counterparts. To assume so is insulting and factually wrong. What I think is China is still slowly transitioning from a 3rd world to a 1st world nation. I'm sure if there are more buses available they used them.

Despite a big economy and many technological advances being made in the past 20/30 yrs etc a large part of China is still 3rd world and a large part of their regulatory policies and laws are still antiquated. All this will change in the decades to come I'm sure.

I agreed, but there's problems and all kinds of 3rd world country outlook in every single large nations. Even here in the US there are rural poverty and urban poverty existed. I feel the majority of the audiences here are more fascinated and concern about what's happening in China right now, instead of the plight of the illegal Mexican workers that did all hard labor to build this country, or the poor African American community that are suffering from gentrification and in desperate need to tackle the many issues that plagued them for decades.

    Thanks for the responses gents.

There's accidents happening everywhere around the world. So why picked on China and its "safety" law?
Of course there are accidents happening all over the world. I doubt you will ever see 59 persons stuffed in a micro bus in the USA.

I'm not picking on China. I just asked a question. Why were 59 persons stuffed in that micro bus?

I don't think that chinese people care less about their safety of that of their children than their western counterparts. To assume so is insulting and factually wrong.
Never stated they did not care. Never. And when did I ever insult the Chinese people? The simple fact is that China has a safety problem. Pure and simple. It is proven out in the photos I see daily.

I just saw the news just now about this accident in China. The spokeswoman, who, surprisingly, spoke in english, told about the known danger of using van transport and the need for safer and bigger school buses. A parent told about being forced to use the van transport because they have no other choice and their children need to go to school. In the poorer areas, it's not that people do not care about safety. It's that they just do not have a safer alternative. Bear in mind that some of these areas may have only extricated themselves from poverty only in recent time.

The same with the coal miners there. Most of them are willing to risk their lifes to work in unlicensed coal mine because they don't have much choice of jobs in the poorer areas. Also the risk in mining in these coal mines may not be any much worse than driving in most countries. That's why most miners in these poorer areas, are willing to take the kind of risk.

I can't wait till the authority cracks down MORE on these unlicensed coal mines and take away all their profits and put it to local use.

Every day millions of children across China make the vital journey from home to school to receive an education. For some it is a perilous journey crammed into the back of an overloaded van with no safety precautions.

On Nov 16 in Gansu province, 21 people, including 19 children, died after their nine-seat bus carrying 64 people collided head-on with a coal truck. The Ministry of Education urged schools and kindergartens nationwide to conduct safety checks on their school buses.

The crackdown has begun, but as seen in these shocking images, the lessons from the Gansu tragedy have gone unheeded. In different cities across China, dozens of little kids - some standing and without seat belts - are still jammed into shoddy vehicles.

Local government of Deqing County has invested 20 million yuan (3.14 million U.S. dollars) to order 79 school buses, which are specially designed for children with smaller seats and seat belts as well as bright yellow color to have better warning function. Among the 79 buses, 14 ones have truck-style front ends, and this appearance like a long nose can effectively reduce the impact force and better protect children's safety. The fire was controlled in an hour after it started at 3:24 a.m., forcing an evacuation of 150 residents from the neighborhood in Shitou Street in the Xihu District, the local fire department said.

Firefighters are continuing the search and rescue activities in the debris.

The fire engulfed an area of about 500 square meters before the firefighters completely put it out at around 6 a.m.

School bus checks kick off nationwide following fatal accident in China - China News - SINA English

BEIJING, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- With special inspection teams set up at all provincial-level governments, school bus safety checks have started across the country just days after a collision claimed the lives of 19 preschoolers on an overloaded bus, according to the Ministry of Education.

In an initial safety check, Beijing's municipal education commission found that some private schools' and kindergartens' buses were overloaded, and many private cars swarming to pick up children after school could also result in traffic disorders outside schools, according to a statement released Tuesday by the ministry.

Beijing has ordered its schools and kindergartens to keep clear records of safety inspections for all their buses and to arrange safety training courses for school bus drivers.

Twenty-one people, including 19 preschoolers and two adults, died and 43 others were injured last Wednesday morning when a nine-seat school bus illegally carrying 64 people collided head-on with a coal truck in northwest China's Gansu province.

In Shanghai, a total of 2,300 school buses will undergo comprehensive checks, including vehicle sanitation and control equipment inspections, by Nov. 25. So far, 15 buses have been found to be operating illegally, and they have been ordered to rectify their illegal operations, said the statement.

In addition to regular safety checks, eastern Jiangsu province held meetings for school bus drivers to exchange experiences on driving children.

Meanwhile, the education commission of southwestern Chongqing Municipality arranged for special personnel to anonymously spot-check school bus operations at middle and elementary schools.

In the statement, the ministry also urged education bureaus at all levels as well as all schools and kindergartens to map out emergency plans against traffic accidents.
