RIP. I'm wondering whether the frequent serious accidents involving large vehicles is simply due to China's size or whether there really is something to be improved for heavy vehicle drivers.

Perhaps the problem is the speed in which these bus and truck drivers are driving. Plus, apparently, following tooooo closely. Are any sort of Commercial (professional) Driving License required to operate large vehicles required in China?

" ..........According to the official Xinhua news agency, the Yangmingtan Bridge was the sixth major bridge in China to collapse since July 2011. Chinese officials have tended to blame overloaded trucks for the collapses, and did so again on Friday.

Many in China have attributed the recent spate of bridge collapses to corruption, and online reaction to the latest collapse was scathing.

“Corrupt officials who do not die just continue to cause disaster after disaster,” said one post on Friday on Sina Weibo, a Chinese microblogging service similar to Twitter.

Another Internet user expressed hope “that the government will put heavy emphasis on this and investigate to find out the real truth, and give both the dead and the living some justice!” A third user was more laconic, remarking, “Tofu engineering work leads to a tofu bridge.”

Chinese news media reported that the bridge had cost 1.88 billion renminbi, or almost $300 million. "

According to a sourced list on wikipedia on road-related death rates, China actually has a rather moderate amount in comparison to other countries, namely those with poorer infrastructure and traffic systems. For example, China has less deaths per 100,000 automobiles than Russia, though China has twice as much deaths per 100,000 automobiles than the U.S. The worst road-related death rate came from the country of Togo, where over 14,000 people per 100,000 automobiles die per year. There's probably a population and economic reason for that huge statistic, but a much richer and larger nation, Ethiopia, came in second with over 11,000 people per 100,000 automobiles die per year.

A reason why China's automobile fatality rates are so high might actually have to do with their size, not from the statistically probability of eventually having more accidents than other countries, but rather from the coverage each accident gets (also probably have to do with the sheer number of accidents). I honestly haven't heard of automobile accidents in Togo, but I'd suspect it's because most won't echo to my part of the world.

Three people were killed and four others injured after a female retiree set fire to an office belonging to a tap water company in central China's Hunan province Monday morning, local sources said.

Around 10:00 a.m. Monday, employee Shi Yanfei rushed into a meeting room where company heads were gathered, spilling gasoline in the room and igniting it, the government press office of the city of Shaoyang said.

Shi jumped out of one of the room's windows after igniting the blaze.

One general manager and two vice general managers were killed, while another three company heads were injured. Shi and the three injured have been sent to a local hospital for treatment.

It is believed that Shi's motivation may have been her dissatisfaction with the position given to one of her children, who also works for the company. Shi is one of the company's early retirement workers.

Don't discount driving behavior either. In my experience in East Asia, people drink very heavily after work and don't have the public transit options to get home that Europeans or Japanese do. Drunk driving is widely tolerated and laws against it are poorly enforced. Penalties against drunk driving are so tiny as to not deter people. Only when a drunk driver kills someone does the legal hammer fall on them. China would do well to change the culture of drunk driving as the United States has done since the 1980s.

Definitely. After work, South Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese will hit the bars and streetside restaurants to drink for hours with their colleagues. They often start late in the night around 8 or 9 PM and continue till midnight. You can see beer cans piled up on, below, and beside their tables. Drunks are sometimes seen resting on the sidewalk or being helped along by their friends. Nobody thinks much of it, it's part of the culture. They think "men will be men". Moreover, drinking beer is part of the business culture. Many business deals and partnerships are negotiated during alcohol binges. This is the case with blue collar or white collar workers, rich and poor, urban and rural. And it leads to a huge drunk driving problem in East Asia.

If I'm not mistaken, I remember reading news reports of alcohol consumption per capital in East Asian countries and probably more so in South East Asian countries being markedly lower than those in Western countries.

More have to do with economics, alcohols are more expensive in the East base on the earning power, so not that much people drink proportionally. However those that do drink, they drink a lot. There is definitely a drinking culture in East.
