Why waste fresh rainwater? Built In the 40's 50's the houses had a raised patio leading to the front door. The patio was essentially a concrete plaster block tank for holding the roof water.

Try to get collect your rainwater as a city dweller now. In fact they banned them. They worked out thats its better to supply your water needs for a couple thou a year. Theyve created water utilitiy companies made it compusory to use their services and flicked these companies on for mega tens of millions plus to privately owned companies.

It wouldnt surprise me if they were given a seat on the company board once they done being city council officials.

Thousands of restaurants and small shops in downtown Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province, suspended their business in the past three days due to a rumor that the local government would crack down on counterfeit goods and businesses that didn't follow the regulations.

However, the government of Shenyang on Tuesday morning denied any special actions and asked small businesses not to believe in the rumors and to resume operations as soon as possible.

On Tuesday morning, 80 percent of shops along Daxi Road, a famous electronic products hub in downtown Shenyang, were closed.

"I would support the government's crackdown, but the alleged action has seriously affected our life. I can't even buy fruit and vegetables in market. All the shops are closed, this is driving me crazy," said local resident Wang Weijin.

Many stall owners said they did not know whether the rumor was true or not, but that they decided to close their shops to prevent any possible risks.

True...it also depends on the quality of the color, cut, and clearness of the diamond that can dictate the price.

I think the problem with doing something like that, here in Texas at least, is the sheer amount of mosquitoes that standing water will spawn. It probably works better in drier places like Arizona and New Mexico where water is scarce.

Younger people have a life and career to worry about. Only older people have spare time to do this.

Plus, even until this day, people in Taiwan are still on the swing. The general population's view towards unification/one China policy could swing anywhere form 80% against it to 80% supporting depending on the political events of the time. So most people just give up caring. Only those hardcore separatist and unificationist will do these crazy protests.

Most people there care more about how to save more gas on the drive home than worrying about who's visiting or which treaty is signed.

Defects found on 12 rail lines - China News - SINA English

The Ministry of Railways has found quality defects on 12 rail lines that may endanger railroad safety, according to a document recently obtained by the media.

Seven of the 12 lines have been put into service, including high-speed passenger railways between Wuhan and Guangzhou and between Zhengzhou and Xi'an, according to the document.

The problems were discovered during routine inspections. The construction defects on the seven lines included cracks and leaks on tunnel arches, tilted communications towers and poorly arranged electronic cables, the Chinese news portal eeo.com.cn reported on Tuesday.

Other problems were found on five lines currently under construction, including one linking Lhasa and Xigaze in the Tibet autonomous region, which is an extension of the Qinghai-Tibet railway.

The ministry severely criticized some contractors for building with low-quality materials and not using enough iron bars in reinforced concrete.

Media reports quoted anonymous experts as saying the defects might threaten railway safety.

Cracks on the railway tunnel's arch could cause concrete chunks to break off when a high-speed train passes, destroying the train's power supply equipment, they said.

A ministry official who spoke to China Daily on the condition of anonymity confirmed the authenticity of the document, saying it was meant to be circulated inside the ministry and to relevant parties.

He said the ministry is paying great attention to quality issues, and has organized regular inspections on railway construction and operations.

"It is just another regular checkup to guarantee railway safety," he said.

According to the document, the ministry has already taken measures to punish those responsible for the quality defects.

It suspended several construction and construction supervision companies from tendering and bidding on railway projects for a month, and required them to rectify the problems as soon as possible.

Wang Mengshu, an expert on railway tunnel construction at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said he has not seen the document, but knew that holes had been found in the arches of railway tunnels on the Wuhan-Guangzhou passenger line and the Zhengzhou-Xi'an line.

A cavity in the tunnel arch could cause it to collapse.

"These problems will not affect the operation of the entire line but need to be fixed," he said.

"People around me are expressing worries over taking high-speed trains after reading the news," said Sun Pengwei, a resident of Fuzhou, Fujian province, who travels twice a month on the Fuzhou-Xiamen high-speed line — one of the defective railways.

"Although no accidents have occurred on the line, I hope authorities can make sure that there are no hidden risks."

The public has the right to know any safety threats in the railway system, and authorities should make such information more transparent, he said.

Zhao Jian, a professor at Beijing Jiaotong University, said some major railway contractors tend to subcontract minor projects to smaller companies to save money and meet tight deadlines.

In February, Sheng Guangzu, minister of railways, said railway construction was a field that needs stringent supervision on quality, work safety and officials' behavior.

The ministry recently announced details of disciplinary violations of former minister Liu Zhijun, who made huge illegal profits by helping others bid for several railway projects, including high-speed railways, Chinese media reported.

Tang Hui, a mother of underage rape victim, is interviewed by Xinhua reporter after being released from a labor camp in Yongzhou City, central China's Hunan Province, Aug. 10, 2012. Tang was sent to the Reeducation Through Labor Center in Yongzhou on Aug. 2 to serve an 18-month sentence for "seriously disturbing social order and exerting a negative impact on society" after she protested in front of local government buildings, complaining that the municipal police department had falsified evidence to reduce the sentences of those who kidnapped and raped her 11-year-old daughter, and forced her into prostitution. Tang filed an appeal on Aug. 7. After considering her appeal, the center decided to allow her to leave, since her daughter, now 17 years old, is still a minor and requires her mother's care, provincial publicity officials said. Tang's claim that the municipal police falsified evidence is also under investigation, they said. (Xinhua/Long Hongtao)
