I think they were hand picked from various universities. Just my opinion.

Re: US President Obama in China photos & discussion

Very clearly, the meeting of Presidents has not been a meeting of minds. The pre-meeting comments did not auger well "Conflict between us is not inevitable". This is not a particularly encouraging phrase as it suggests the old Airplane Movie plot where all the crew and most of the passengers have food poisoning, but where a tragic disaster is not inevitable!

At the public statements, the body language was poor and both men spoke about different things. Obama concentrated on Religious Freedoms and the Dalai Lama, while Hu concentrated on business and protectionism. In other words no significant progress has been made on any issue other than to keep talking.

The sub text appears to be that America "will not seek to constrain the rise of China" only as long as China agrees to play the part of Junior partner, while China itself is only prepared to accept a position of equality. In the meantime NED will continue to fund Chinese dissident groups and Beijing will not allow any significant appreciation of the Yuan.

My opinion (expressed and illustrated in detail elsewhere) is that we have seen a year of intense hardball being played between both sides and that so far neither side has been prepared to yield any substantive point to the other. My prognosis therefore is that this hardball will not only continue but also intensify over the coming months.

I have to disagree with that. I think it's been a trend for a US president to play hardball with China since Nixon's time. The things only warm up later on. If you look at all the former US administration, it's always like this. It's a game played by both sides for a long time. I think this is decided by domestic politics in both nations. Both leaders want to please the public. The new US president is tell the Americans "see, I'm tough on China. I'm going to be a good president." and The Chinese president is telling the Chinese "I have a strong spine and I'm standing up to the superpower." At the same time, I think, the Chinese president is also telling his newly elected American counterpart "look, you are the rookie here. I've been around long before you and I'm your equal. Don't you ever look down on me! Those things you said about China in your election will never work!"

Re: US President Obama in China photos & discussion

There's been alot of positive statements released during this visit, but nothing that tells us anything new. It's like Hu and Obama are reliterating everything both nations have already agreed on in past forums like the G20.

No breakthroughs have been made on disagreements, like the value of Yuan and US's increasing slide towards protectionism. I cant see China and US seeing eye to eye on climate change and as a result the upcoming Copenhagen summit is going to be a flop.

IMO the bottom line is this; there are more disagreements between the two nations than there are agreements. Both leaders will keep the lid on things, but underneath, the tensions only going to increase.

Re: US President Obama in China photos & discussion

It seems like this meeting was really a waste of time. Obama just went to China to have both sides tell each other that they're not ready to make any meaningful compromises on any of the issues between them. Obama really should have been more prepared to compromise (ie discontinue any support to the Dalai Lama or kill the newest Taiwan arms bill or something) to obtain Chinese support on Iran. Chinese support on an issue like that is worth something, not like Russia's.

Re: US President Obama in China photos & discussion

came as a bit if surprise to a lot of investors that China didnt let RMB appreciate even a lil bit at the eve of obama's visit. in fact ministry of commerce said that RMB will not be subjected to exogenous influences when obama arrived. China took a pretty hardline gesture here, said no to pretty much all of America's demand.

looks like Xi Jinping further secured his status as the designated successor though, being the one to greet obama at the airport.

Re: US President Obama in China photos & discussion

Certain comments and actions from Obama's adminiatration in their first few months in office did some damage. The most redicules was that the comment that the financial crisis was caused by Chineses saving habit, then recently there is the tax on China made tyre etc.

In contrast, Bush looked more China friendly. and had taken much effect to mend with China.

Obama has to show more to do better than Bush in US-China affair. And I agreed that this trip is really a waste of time.

And why is that US presidents always put their hand on the shoulder of their counter-parts? In Asia, usually only the elders or the respected ones can do that to others, or between two people of good relationship. I think it is US president's way of saying "Hey, buddy I am your big brother".

Re: US President Obama in China photos & discussion

US prez are generally friendlier to China in their second term for obvious reasons. it came earlier for bush cuz of 9/11. otherwise think about the plane crash in april 01.
if obama wins re-election he'd be considerably friendlier to China too.

The tires and steel pipe were a pre-emptive slap in the face. Usually, before an important visit, the Chinese leaders would do some little bit of wheel-greasing, like free a few dissidents. But the tires and steel pipe made that impossible.
