WARSAW, Poland — A Boeing 767 from Newark, New Jersey, carrying 230 passengers made an emergency landing in Warsaw after its landing gear failed to open.

Leszek Chorzewski, the spokesman for LOT, the Polish airline that operated the flight, said none of the passengers was injured.

Amen to that popeye. The people have that crew to thank for superb flying. Did you see how smooth she came in for that belly landing? And the airport fire fighters were right there with retardant as well.

Yes sir.. It was an awesome effort all around.

I'd like to know more about the pilot and co-pilot.

It's helped by the weather as well since there is no rain, fog or strong winds.

Will the plane be written off after this?

I do not know. It seemed like an extremely soft landing for its belly and nothing major seemed to fly off. I would guess that they could repair it and have it re-enter service...but the insurance will have a lot to say about it too.

That is some magnificent flying/landing. Training, training and more training pays off, just like the US Airways flight 1549 when it landed on the Hudson river in 2009

Is it true, prior towards the landing, they spray some kind of substance on the runway to help the plane from creating too much spark?

I heard that they used to do that, but have now changed to not spraying because the foam that they spray is slippery and causes the plane to glide too much. But from the article it seems that they did lay something on the tarmac beforehand.

Yes, it was reported they laid something. I'm guessing, since slipperiness (is there such a word?) is a problem, some flame retardant with an amount of viscosity that'll provide some breaking action.

That's okay...the Boeing 767 is a good aircraft...and to prove the point, it held together well in this incident.

The pilots did an 'AMAZING' job in landing this plane ...

That was really a master class landing, a text book procedure which should be taught to every pilot

I would imagine in their simulators they all train for all sorts of contingencies, including belly landings. Very few...very very small perentage ever have to actually do it though. In this case it is clear that the pilot, his training, the aircraft tiself, and the conditions came together to allow him to do so very successfully.
