Sorry to hear that mate. I guess they were really punishing you artillerist boys!

TBH We (in engineer company) also had rubber boots on during the march ending our basic training. After that we always used leather boots while marching.

I still find quite funny that you use 2 different types of boots, we got a temperate combat boot (for 10 to 35 C) and a wet combat boot (from -20 to +20 C) and both are waterproof

Like we said in the Aussie Army, "If it hurts then u r doing it right".
As for ditching stuff, yes u don't wanna ditch anything but hey like i said "for some strange reason u might want to do that", who knows. And please don't compare paintball with real infantry work.

we actually had 4 pairs of boots, Two sets of rubber boots (to summer and winter), the normal leather stringboots and parade/walk out leather string boots.

Re: Ordinary PLA infantrymen

In Australia, we 2 types of boots. We get two pairs of combat boots..... no winter stuff for us because aussie land is hot most of the time. And a pair of parade boots that is only worn during ceremonies. Both the old and new combat boots are abit shithouse, the new ones are slightly better in comfort and fit, other than that it still eats into ur feet if u don't tape ur feet properly for a long march.
As for webbing, many of us still have the old webbing with most of ur gear around ur waist i actually like it abit better than the new chest webbing because i can rest my rifle on the ammo pouch when i am feeling abit lazy. Also the bum-bag makes a nice pillow. Even if it was abit more of a pain to get a new magazine out, its all just practise.

Re: Ordinary PLA infantrymen

all in all, having boots is better than no boots at all.

the PLA should seriously consider equipping their soldiers with combat boots. They prevent hurting your feet so much better than the "liberation shoes" they still gave their soldiers. I am convinced of this when during my last paintball fight with my friends, a friend of mine twisted his ankle badly and now he couldnt even walk.

The PAP is a sub-branch of the PLA. PAP acts exactly like the US National Guard. Now that China has become more organized in their armed forces, they can design different branches from the PLA with different functions, just like National Guard to US Army.

Re: Ordinary PLA infantrymen

If I'm not mistaken, those SWAT photos posted by Eric Chu is from the Beijing special police unit called Snow Wolf Commando Unit (SWCU):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Wolf_Commando_Unit

Note unit page pictured in above link.

These are special counter-terriorism SWAT units organized ahead of 2008 Olympics and cannot be considered joe average PLA infantry. Each SWCU officer is said to be outted with approx. $38,000 USD worth of equipment (body armor, radio, etc).

If you outfit 1 million infantry with same stuff, that'd cost you $38 billion. hehehe.
