China's new Type 99A2 Main Battle Tank


China's new Type 99A2 MBT (main battle tank) should be comparable to America's most-advanced M1A2 Abrams MBT.


China's Type 99A2 MBT is more advanced than the older American model M1A2 in at least one respect. Notice the reactive armor on the side of the Type 99A2 turret to enhance its survivability against "shaped charges." This feature is absent on the M1A2.

China's original Type 99A1 MBT is widely believed to be comparable to the U.S. M1A1 MBT. China's Type 99A1 MBT carries an expensive price tag of $2.5 million per tank, which is in the ballpark figure for an U.S. M1 Abrams.

If necessary, reactive armor can be placed over the armored skirt panels to provide more protection. On the American Abrams, the wheels are left exposed.

Much as I agree that Chinese tanks are under-armored, how can you tell that the skirts are now armor skirts rather than the same old rubber ones? They look the same to me.

Based on the picture which shows part of the front of the tank, does the driver's position looks like it's on the left to anyone else?

Could the chassis be a hybrid of the Type 96 chassis (based on the driver position and rear vents) and the T-72/Type 99 chassis (based on road wheel spacing)?

russian technical manual (which later reprint in International defense review) show that combinaion of rubber and steel plate can defeat 20mm~25mm calibre gun.
but most of Type-99 do not carry ADS,around 2008,article appear in wmf,about the ADS kill mechanism.it uses "shoot gun" type to shower and destroy incoming RPG or ATGM.
in December 2011 issue of Asia-Pacific Defence magazine,while T-90MS still uses carousel auto loader,it completely redesign,it incorporate armour belt around auto loader.another spare ammo are relocated to storage box located in the back of the turrent.

There are different kill methods for ADS, Some use the Shotgun effect others guided kinetic energy projectiles others guided bombs.

It looks really neat, modern and very...er, Westernized.

Folks at Taiwan are already showing their jealousy by calling it "M1-copy"...

But using the commander's AAMG as reference, this looks not much bigger than the Japanese Type 10 MBT.
