As said over in CDF... it's possible. As usual a lot of people say but never show. So far I've seen two slightly different variations. This may be another.

I can tell it is CGI because the tank is way too sharp compared to the background, and the background noise in the picture. The picture looks Photoshopped from my perspective.

Re: New Type98/99 MBT thread

That's could be because of what type of lens and distance the shot was taken. That doesn't say anything about the tank itself.

What I notice that's odd is the image looks stretched overall.

The thing I question is some of the components on the turret itself has changed from previous images. But then those images too have slight difference from each other.

The backround may be a photograph, but the tank surely isen't. Its computerized drawing, and quite obvious one. Well made and nice looking, but GCI nevertheless.

Re: New Type98/99 MBT thread

Well, it's CGI. But it doesn't mean it isn't informative. Perhaps the artist just wanted an illustrative perspective given the not-so illustrative collection of photos. Interesting that the large box on the left turret (presumably the kill mechanism for the APS) is left out.
As to the device over the gun, it may also be a designator/guidance for ATGM?

Sino-Pakistani joint development of Khalid main battle tanks equipped Pakistani army has been quant.
is this type 98/99 tank?
The smoke launcher placement is closer to what you'd find on a T-80UD or T-84, I think.

I kind of feel that the new 99G subbvariant might be too soon yet to get a PLA unit number.

Re: New Type98/99 MBT thread

Khalid uses french supplied FCS.
back in late 90's ,I have watch the video of fire demonstration from Leclerc tank .
3 tanks (discard amx-30?) target 2000 meter to 2500 meter, all hit ,first shot first hit in less than 15 second.
by contrast, Chinese FCS fro NORINCO sales brochure require something like 8~9 second to track and fire .in modern tank battle ,it was suicide.
according to JDW, Chinese engineer trying to overcome this problem.

Nope...

That is real picture, thats for sure, but the tank isen't Type 99 series, but the older Type 90/MBT 2000 export tank in its latest suite.

Re: New Type98/99 MBT thread

The camoflage on the tank says "not for PLA use". It says "Chinese New Third Generation MBT" on the poster, but I thought MBT-2000 and Type-90/96 are all second generation MBTs, only Type-99/99G are third gen.

Re: New Type98/99 MBT thread

Camoflage may indicate it is under trials/evaluation, not yet inducted. There's no PLA insignia either. As for what exactly it is, the hull looks pretty short, but the Type-99A2 hull is about 1 meter shorter than the Type-99 hull. The Type-99A2 hull is based on the MBT-2000 hull, so I wouldn't be surprised if it looked similar. I think this may actually be the Type-99A2, the first clear full body photo. Its timing is not surprising, considering the CG just came out.

Re: New Type98/99 MBT thread

I find it quite weird that the new PLA tanks hull would be based on the Type 90 hull as the main reasons why PLA never adopted the type 90 design was that very hull. The type 98 which envolved for the type 99 had redesigned, more T-72ish type of hull which was slightly larger so that it could accomodate more powerfull engine. Why would chinese move backwards with this?

My quess this is the latest development of that type 90 which was continued as a export design fitted with the latest "goodies" that is avialble at china. But I think its still offered mainly for export, hence the fance camoflage.

PS. Images of this particular tank had been around since last year...

Re: New Type98/99 MBT thread

Well let me fill you in. The reason why the Type-90 based hull is viable again is that the new power pack is compact and mounted transverse. It has the same power as the current Type-99 power pack. I suppose there are some advantages to the Type-90 hull versus the Type-98 hull. One I would guess is less mass, since it is smaller.

This new variant has likely just finished road trials. Whether it will be adopted is probably still unknown. As to the camo, that's just whatever colors the factory bothered to paint it, not standard PLA since it is not inducted.
