I searched for it in google and this thread came up on top O_O
It seems Norfolk didn't read his source correctly. To quote Ariana Threat Guide:
The later T-72Ms and T-72M1s are equipped with laser rangefinders ensuring high hit probabilities at ranges of 2,000 meters and below
According to this, the limitation is clearly with fire control, not the gun.

    BTW, the link is

there are some talk about the 120mm vs. 125mm tank gun, but one area just as important was the fire control system.
in 1991 back issue of IDR,the reporter interview several ex-west. german official who exam the east german t-72 tank.claim the russian supplied fire control system is mediocre. but admit 125mm tank gun has "growth potential".

Images from Chinese television, showing Type-99's fire control systems, note on the third picture, the range reads 4791,does it mean that Type-99 is capable of engaging targets up to 5km away?

You don't expect them to show the real picture do you? They probably spliced in that part.

Hmmm dont no why everyone keeps saying things about the Type 99 shot trap issue. To hit the spot its is both hard to penetrate and difficult. That area armour is pretty much thicker then the rest. Only issue which I think should be fixed is the slow acceleration of the Type 99 taking 12 seconds to reach 0-32km/h much slower than the South Korean counterpart taking 7 seconds. With 5 seconds difference you couldv'e evaded enemy fire by then with the extra speed.

    Re: New Type98/99 MBT thread

?! Where'd you get that information? 1500hp may not be torque, but for such a high powered diesel machine, its torque should be enough to accelerate at a good pace.

Then as someone else said, tanks usually aren't really required to run fast, especially during battle.

I want Asia on my front porch and America as my backyard.
Disclaimer: By America, I meant the Continent. And yes, I know Asian homes have neither a backyard nor a porch in the American sense.

With modern KE penetrators, they don't tend to ricochet like the old AP rounds do.

Both engines are 1500HP but the Korean counterpart is heavier yet having faster acceleration time...0-32km/h in 12 second is fairly slow
