It looks tike the beam has a centain thickness. Would be interesting to know it it was a pulse, a series of pulse or continuous wave (probably most likely last one)

The guy (and his team) who developed the (might be) shipborne high-powered multi-phase direct-current power plant (or something like that), has been reported to received the "National Scientific-Technology Development Award" (国家科技进步奖) - an award get you to shake hands with boss Hu, and frequently unclaimed throughout the years.

To put it more sense, the Chief Engineer who in charge of J-20 project, DID NOT get this award.

This man and his project is also heavily discussed among Chinese military forums, for the link to possible A*s-kicking-ship-engine, and possible shipborne laser weapons.

Professional person at this forum can take some more in-depth look into this matter.

Brother, you read Chinese, you can search the term “国家科技进步奖".

I am not good at translate "Chinese characterized"(中国特色) stuff into English, especially at a forum where all kinds of deadly serious people are lurking around.

Did a search of that term and it seems the most recent report in 4 Mar 2011 is about some guy who was originally awarded this prize, but got stripped because of plagiarism. (我国首例国家科学技术进步奖被撤前后_新闻中心_新浪网 : 我国首例国家科学技术进步奖被撤前后)

Anyway, found this interesting list of recipients of what is said to be the "National Most High Tech Prize" (loose translation of “国家最高科学技术奖”). Of interest in that list (国家科学技术奖励工作办公室) are the following people:

    2003年度获奖人

王永志(1932.11~) 男,航天技术专家,中国工程院院士,中国人民解放军总装备部研究 员。 (Aerospace specialist from PLA General Armaments Department who won the prize in 2003).

    2008年度获奖人

徐光宪(1920.11~) 男,化学家,中国科学院院士,北京大学教授。(Chemist from Beijing University who won the prize in 2008).

    2009年度获奖人

孙家栋(1929.04~) 男,航天技术专家,中国科学院院士,现任中国航天科技集团公司高级技术顾问。[Aerospace specialist from AVIC(?) who won the prize in 2009].

The chemist is probably the only one who may be involved in laser-related R&D.

    HAHA. That must be photoshopped.
You can't see laser beams like that.

Depends on the atmosphere, and whether they add treatment to allow it to be photographed seem.
Because you can see laser beams in many outdoor concerts.

    Yes you can.

But that photo is misleading -- it's hardly an example of China equalling or surpassing US laser technology -- it's probably just a targetting laser or something. But the PRC is making strides in the field of lasers

I have a pic of the same, but with only ONE beam instead of THREE. Someone PSed the photo one way or another, but this matter itself, is real.

That laser platform, is widely believed to be used at Type 99 MBT for "Electric warfare".

Laser beams used for out door concerts are different than laser beams used for blowing up say, an IRBM.

Most likely, as Red Sword has said, that's just the PLA's prototype for an ECW variant of the Type 99.

Kinda reminds me of this peculiar Soviet creation:

I'm assuming that picture of that Type 99-ECW is just armed with those laser "blinders" that are standard for the Type 99 but up-powered to provide longer range and more pew pew.

It is the sensor blinder used on the Type 99.

It won't blow up a tank/plane but it's designed for long-range ECW (by blinding stuff).
