China wins third place in 2010 Sniper World Cup!!!

China first entered this competition, held in Budapest, Hungary in 2007 and did not perform very well due to the relatively backward sniper-rifles used and backward sniper doctrines. It looks like we've come a long way in three short years .

At the 9th Police and Military Sniper World Cup just wrapped up in Budapest, Hungary, a team of snipers from the Chinese People’s Armed Police Force (APF) pocketed two gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals.

The Police and Military Sniper World Cup is a top-level pageant to snipers all over the world and famous for its largest number of participating teams and the highest degrees of difficulty of the events.

The Chinese APF team had ever appeared on the sniper world cup range for three times since 2007. It didn’t on the shortlist for the finals in 2008 and only got the 10th place in the team event in 2009.

In that very year, Otto Simonyi, a sniper instructor working with the Police Training Center of Hungary, made such comments on the Chinese snipers: “Your rifles and competition level as well as your understanding of the concept of sniping in the contemporary world are just like that of us 15 years ago. So, only by starting from fundamentals and participating in more international contests to get in line with international standards, can you reach the top-class level in the world.” Simonyi is the owner of gold metals for three consecutive years.

Compared with their peers, the Chinese armed police snipers have no advantage in the performance of the equipment, but after years of hard work they finally got good marks. Below are some pictures provided by the team members.

Unfortunately Remington brand rifles were used to achieve the said performance. Looks like we still need to improve domestic sniper rifles.

I consider myself to be equally Chinese and American although almost everyone I meet consider me to be purely American. Still could speak the language fluently though .

I tried finding more info on the tournament but this is the only article I could find besides the one on Pakistan Defence talking about the same subject. Russia won in 2007 and the U.S., U.K., and Canada were pretty close to the top so I assume they took the winning positions?

If anyone knows the actual English name for the tournament or better yet, understands Bulgarian, please feel free to update this thread.

say what you will canada still has the best snipers in the world. and i reserve some doubt to the credibility of those british records. they were prolly just made up so the brits dont lose face cuz they got their @$$ wooped by the taliban snipers.

in that case the canadians still hold the record for the top kill so be jealous

It's not just the rifle. The bullet matters a lot also: the SVD with Russian stock ammo will get you results at around 2 MOA. With 7N1s and Czech silvertips, etc from most of the former Eastern Bloc, you will get results down to 1.5 to 1 MOA. But if you were able to get some of the American or Finnish made ammo, your results will get down .75 MOA or even better.
China is starting to make sniper rifles, but does China make quality sniper grade ammo?

I want Asia on my front porch and America as my backyard.
Disclaimer: By America, I meant the Continent. And yes, I know Asian homes have neither a backyard nor a porch in the American sense.

The available stuff is somewhere in between Russian and ex Eastern Bloc material, but I don't know if there is a better quality batch reserved for domestic military usage.

ammo is provided by the organizer so everyone gets the same quality ammo.

but yeah if it was Chinese rifle AND Chinese ammo, then this so called third place team is going nowhere.

You are absolutely right. When the Chinese team first participated in 2007 the Type-88 sniper rifle that was used was disqualified since the accuracy didn't even qualify for a Western sniper rifle and they were forced to use foreign guns. Since they were using unfamiliar weapons they performed even worse than usual. I guess there has been a bit of a wakeup call in the Chinese military regarding sniper doctrine and hardware.

the type 88 was never meant to be a sniper rifle. its a marksman rifle which serves a different purpose.

Exactly, it is falls under the category of 'Designated Marksmen rifle', in the same sort of category as the Russian SVD or American M14DMR

Which was probably the reason for the disqualification.

It would have been interesting to see how the team would have performed had they allowed the type88. For a sniper, being intimately familiar with their weapon is often more useful and important than a slightly more accurate weapon.

Also, since the organisers supply the ammo, it makes me wonder if that might have also played a part in the disqualigication decision if they didn't have the 5.8mm ammo. It seems strange on the face of it that they would disqualify an 'inferior' gun, as normal rules are there to prevent someone from gaining an unfair advantage through the use of equipment.

What is interesting is that, China had made advances in multiple areas in military technology from the very high tech (anti-satellite systems, JL-2, DF-31, anti-ship ballistic missiles, etc) to the lower technology system (Type-95 and a number of SMG... even the Type-99 MBT - consider low tech as compare to the anti-satellite system).

But they cannot come out with a decide sniper rifle? A decent ammunition for their sniper rifle? Whats the deal?
