CASC introduced GPS guide 155mm round

during the DSA exhibition, ALMT 9subsidiary of CASC) introduced WS-35 155mm guide round. while no picture of actual round been released ,an drawing did appear.according to kanwa, there are two version, each has 4 pop up fins in the tail another 4 on the nose for flight stabnilization..overall lenght of 1620mm,weight 18 kg. storage 10 years.range 100km (???) CEP 40m.
the 100km range coild be printing error, since Chinese sales brochure often have spelling errors in there english text.
aside from this,NORINCO is offering improve 155mm laser guided round called GP-6.
GP-6 is improve version of GP-1 LGR. over lenght of GP-6 is shorten by 30mm,using lighter material to reduced weight.
to date ,up to 1000 gp-1 SOLD TO uae, during live firing exercise in UAE,9 out of 10 rounds hit there target.the last one miss is due to use of french laser designator.which may be imcompatible to GP-1.
NORNCO is actively promoting AR-3 MLRS. at present GPS/Beidou guide round is under develop.

So was Saddam's Project Babylon supergun a fantasy? If the above range is correct at 100km and the supergun supposedly had a range of 750km, you could figure out something in the middle enough to cover all in a Taiwan-type scenario. That would probably be cheaper than China building all those missiles.

Re: CASC introduced GPS guide 155mm round

A quick google showed that Taiwan's 180 km from the Southern Coast of China, and IIRC, the LRLAP that the USN is developing for it's Zumwalt Destroyers have a maximum range of about 190 km at best (apparently it could be as low as 140 km, but can be remedied by having it on a ship). I do recall debating about it's uses in another thread, but throwing 11 kg of HE accurately across the Taiwan strait would be a relatively cheap way to do damage against Taiwan, especially if you have a lot of explosives coming down and even morso if they were all GPS guided. Of course, you could just build bigger and bigger guns, but that's not really cost effective I'd imagine.

To address an ancient point in that topic I mentioned above, 11 kg of HE can do damage, especially if made into a thermobaric charge, here's 11 kg of C4 going off (skip to 0:47 for the explosion): TBS: Bravo Co 2-10: 25 lbs of C4 Explosive - 2 misfires - YouTube and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mwb5VLcs7NQ

Now imagine 10 of those going off per gun per minute with each round landing within a 100 m 95% of the time. Albeit you'd probably need to place the guns on a ship to get coverage of all of Taiwan but you get the picture.

    Alternatively you can shoot missiles

By the way, as a reminder, the RPO-M with a 3 kg Thermobaric warhead can do this to a masonry structure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K3Cd69tqJ4

    I'm already getting fanboyly.

I'm pretty sure the range quote is in error, unlikely anything of that range yet within the Chinese tube artillery arsenal.

Much more likely to be in the 50+km range (rocket-assisted round) using something like Denel's VLAP and a 155mm 52-54 caliber gun.

The 4 pop-up tail fins and 4 front guidance fins remind me of Excalibur.

For a 155 mm round 18 kilos is very light, that's only 39.6 lbs!

Typical 152/155 mm round weights are around 45 to 50 kilos so I find the lightweight Chinese round surprising.

Guided gliding mortar and gun artillery rounds are not a new concept. Translation is one thing to get wrong, but the basic characteristic numbers are not going to be wrong. The 18 kg mass might be an indicator of how it is done.
