hahaha, yes, water do freeze at 0 degree. but the temperature is different below, so.....even though i don't see any pic either.

I remember we used to dig the ice in the lake to a swimming way, and then, u just dive into the water, it's common winter sport in north China, my grandfater does that every year.

Oh, I do not believe that is soilder standing in front of Tiananmen wwwaaay, i think that is really a cop, the unform is the same that Chinese police officers wear and you do often see police officers and soilders (with guns and rifles) in Tiananmen square. Anyways I could be wrong.

and i too believe he's just a police. i've been to tiananmen square a few times and the only soldiers i saw are the ones who rise the flag out every morning. btw, i think this pic was taken a few years ago because now the police uniforms are all black.

Hey, wait a sec, isnt that guy part of the People's Armed Police? He looks like the PAP in the photos youo find on this site, I agree cops today in China's Public Safety (gong an) wear black uniforms but those are mainly the high ranked officers.

let me clear it up for you guys
public police wears black uniforms. that's all of them, from lowly new recruit to the police chief.
armed police wear green, looks very similar to military uniform, the man in the picture is a PAP.
army wears green, but the suit is different from this one.

back on topic...
beijing is not really cold by north european/canadian standards.. but it does gets about -5C. so standing in the cold and not move at all really sucks.. shows the dicipline of the troops standing there.
the second pic is most likely troops stationed in northern areas on survival training, just to get them to get used to the cold. since a lot of recruits are from the southern areas, most have never seen snow in their lives.

too bad i didn't put in cops and PAP uniform in my uniform thread. it's too common knowledge for chinese, and yet it seems so difficult to explain to you people.
cops' uniform changed from oliver green to black in about 2000. PAP is about under the command of dept of public security (police), or i might be wrong about that since i never liked them... so the used to wear similiar unifrom as the cops, only it's military style, the cap badge is the same.
this is a tiananmen square guard, pretty similiar to the red square guards. and i think they can't wear the winter cap, since it won't look nice. there are guards standing beside the flag too, they have this vent on the ground, that fans out warm air.
and no, actually beijing could be quite cold in the winter. beijing could get -20 as well.
offtopicly, my second year in canada, a friend from south europe asked me if i ever seen a thing called snow in china, which made me speechless, because my hometown is much colder than south ontario.....
