Hey guys, whats the diff between point air defence and fleet air defence? How close in to the ship or group the threat is intercepted. Point, as the name implies, is a last ditch defense very close in to the ship. Fleet, or area air defense, is usually referring to much longer range acquisition and interception.
Most point defenses are no more than a few miles or kilometers. Area defense may extend out over 150 miles from the ship or inner group.

fleet air defence is a wide umbrella of missle and gun fire a ship can provide for the entire fleet, as stated in the name. arleigh burkes and 52cs with hq-9s and standards suite this mission. point air defense is provided by ciws and/or short range missles such as the thales crotale or hq-6. its normally used simply for the short range self defense of a ship.
