Just to get a quick overview on where people on this forum live, I decided to start a little poll. It will hopefully show aprox how many percentage of the members who actually live in the China area.

Easy question:

Where do you live?

Canada should be a separate choice, just because a lot of people here do live in canada like myself. also, korea and japan are east asia, not south east. india and pakistan are south asia.

still, nice chart those :)

and oh btw, I voted wrong, I currently live in the US, not the mainlands

lol, good job. so that would mean no one living in mainland has voted because there's only 1 vote for mainland.

you should have made it north america and south america instead of US and everywhere else.

Thats right but my family came from Norway about 150 years ago, whilst it seems pretty likely that I will end my days in Hong Kong if not the Chinese Mainland. That Viking blood just cant seem to sit still........

I went to live in China with my grandma when I was two, and moved back to the states when I was six.

to answer your question, i'm here but i'm extremely busy nowadays. I find time to read the topics from time to time and i only post when i have something to say even though i clearly show my absence on some very interesting topics due to me not having time to participate. Should have been a scandinavia alternative (Finland not part of Scandinavia geographically but since the majority of the world have a different opinion on that matter it's an equally good alternative to the Nordic countries)

Wow, if education and health care is the only factors that determine how great the city is then

The teachers say they're excercising a basic right - Civil Disobedience. American colonists did it too during the revolutionary period. It isnt necessarily bad.

Well, BC is full of powerful unions (Like SF, we just passed averted a janitor strike, but the teachers might come and ruin things in January and Feburary)
But I don't like Vancouver's weather, too dampening. Or the roads/highway system. But as for the crime, Vancouver is one of Canada's two known major cities, what can you expect? (Not counting Montreal, Quebec or Calgary.)

oh and btw i also hate vancouver's weather and all the other stuff. here it can rain for weeks non-stop in the winter and doesn't even snow much. also the highway sucks, every single morning the two bridges connecting north shore and the rest of the vancouver have major traffic jam. there're also some poorly designed highway exits and entrances where people have been killed. and the highway only has 4 lanes in total! come on, it's a highway, jesus!

well it's not, but health care is a huge part of it. the waiting list for recieving a surgury for cancer is around a year now. it'll most likely to be too late when you finally got to the top of the list. not a good place to be if you're sick if you ask me.

No restriction in moving in the US. You do need to fill out a form at the post office with your new address so your mail will be fowarded. You have to get a drivers liscense from the state you move to. Also new licene plates for your car. And registar to vote in that state you moved to if you so desire. Will need to change your phone service and insurance. No need to inform the police that you move unless you are a convicted sex offender.

Actually the only governmental thing you have to do is get a new drivers liscence. And I know many people that never do that until their one from their previous state expires. If you don't tell the post office you moved your mail will take forever to get your mail fowarded.

What's the issue with the driving licence? Are the trafficrules different in various states? Sorry to ask these noob questions, but the america sometimes seems to have bit weird little details to us finns...Our dirvers licence is aplying in all EU states, no matter where you have gained it first....

nope. the only exeption is puerto rico, where you simply need a u.s passport to go to. but its not a state, so we wont go into that.

every state has slightly varying speeds, fines, drinking amounts, but not many huge discrepancies.

In my state of Washington, you can get a license if your 16, have had a learning permit for 6 months, and have completed the drivers education course.
Driving ages range from 16-18 throughout the United States.
For example, in Sumdud's state of California, the driving age is 18, while in SwimmerXC's Florida, it is 16 (like Washington).

Speed limits generally range from 55 mph to 80 mph on the freeways, and 20 mph to 45 mph within cities, depending on the road and location.
For drinking, most states have the same regulations. To get a DUI, (drinking under influence), you simply have to have your senses impaired in one way or another. Also, even if you are not impaired, it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol level above 0.08%. Fines and penalties for drinking, speeding, and other offenses vary. Seat belt laws also vary from state to state. In Washington, for example, there is a $101 fine for not wearing seatbelts. And no, I haven't gotten any tickets yet.

Gollevainen, No matter what state you live in your drivers liscence is good in any of the 50 states. But if you move to a new state and intend to remain there most states require you to get a new liscence in a certian period of time. That period of time varies from state to state. Also you need to registar your car in that state that you have moved to.

Confused?????

I thought Vancouver and Seattle rains about 9 months out of the year? But if the rain is from the Winter mainly, I can live with that. (Same as San Francisco, except no snow except once every 40 years.)
But the freeways/highways? Hel yea! 2 lanes in each direction? That's even worse than Hong Kong......(If you read my AIM profile, you'll know what I mean by "Canada needs better highways!")

Just out of curiosity...if you move (to live) from one state to another in US, is there any restrictions, more paperwork or anything extra fuzz form it????
Nothing for the government really. Only drivers licenses, since the driving rules are different in each states (Though we act more like provinces I think.)

But for the freeways(AKA highways/expressways in different places.)
80 mph? Friedrice, are you sure? Last time I checked, it's 70 max(113km/h). And I've seen it down to 35 mph(57 km/h) in Boston. Alcohol allowance is usually 0.1% in most states.(0.08% for 4 states, including California and Washington), kids 0.01%.

PS- doesn't Germany and Italy's highways allow people to run up to 120/130 km/h?

PiSigma
12-12-2005, 09:33 PM
Germany highways pretty much don't have speed limits. Montana for a few years didn't have speed limits, when i was there, was driving for 160 km/h.. that was swt.. the roads are flat, straight, two lane and no cars.. so can fall asleep for 10 minutes and you'll be fine.

most of the Autobahns I've been on in Germany do have speed limits, but lots of people ignore them.

do you know which Autobahn stretches in germany are without speed limits? I would like to rent a car someday and take it for a spin on one of those.
