4 fighter pilots of the First air division.
J-8II at the back, with the Siberian Tiger (northeast tiger in china) which is the newest icon for the division.
1st air force division is one of the oldest unit in the air force. the defender of the northeast industrial district and the Aces over the Korean air. most likly formed in 1950, with the HQ in Anshan. this division's patch will be in my hands shortly, muahahaha.

are they the best PLAAF has to offer or the punks at Beijing Flight Test & Training Centre?

punks? is this supposed to be an insult?
they are jet pilots, as long as J-8IIs are still in service, that's not the a very good unit, since J-8II is not the best jet in the service. Even though Su-27/J-11 are produced in shenyang, but many are issued to the south units. The newest photos are showing 1st div is being issued 11s, which is....very nice.......
the point of this picture is, chinese pilots are no longer "woodstick" infront of the jets, they are young and live as all of the other pilots in the west.

Hey Red Guard,
Many times we Westerners crack jokes with each other. Take the US Navy. Going back as far as the 1930s, you had different aircraft communties and the pilots from each communities would tease each other. Example:
VF Fighter Guys F4 and later F14 pilots/RIO
VA Attack Guys A4,A6 and a7 guys
VFA Fighter Attack Guys (FAGS) F/A-18 Hornet pilots.
You also have guys calling guys from other units punks or pukes.
Fighter Jock, Recon Puke.
Also plane types have funny stories.
F-15E Mud Hen
EA-6B Prowler is sometimes called the Queer
F/A-18 Hornet is often called the Bug
F-14 is often called the Turkey
A-7 Corsair (Short Little Guly uh Fellow yeah)
F-104 was called One Oh Whore (because of the stubby wings, it was said to have no visible means of support)
AV-8 Harrier (Lawn Dart,Widowmaker)
F-4U Corsair Ensign Elimenator
AD/A-1E/H Skyraider was called the SPAD by the US Navy crews.
The F-105 was called THUD by other pilots until the name was taken as a badge of honor and respect.
Other nicknames
F-100 The Hun
F-101 One Oh Wonder
F-111 Magic Show, Switch Blade,Varks,Pig
HH-3A Sea King Rescue Version (War Winnebego,Whittling Shitcan)
A4 (Hotrod,Scooter,Mighty Midget,Fartcart)
Some names and jokes are made in good fun. For the Navy and Marines, they will always join together to joke and tease the USAF.

Gimme a J-10 or J-11 and I'll RISK MY LIFE
Why?
Cuz I have no life and I'm a loser
Why?
Cuz I'm a outcast
Why join?
Cuz dying in the air is better than in ground, plus I'm defending my own country

really, i've been in canada for many years, and i see this. it might be the cultrual difference, we chinese find it very hard to take. we normally would name the units and self some very cool name like.....mountains, and..rivers, and iron something something .... which....when it comes out in english, i kinda feel we are like the indians...."strong mountain"......that's why i post this pic, as today's pilot is no longer posing in those formal poses like in attention and stuff......

I have a question for you then
Do you westerners think that WESTERN culture is superior than Ancient Asian cultures ??? Dont forget even ENGLISH and GERMANS are considered BARBARIANS by the world then.
PLAAF pilots are punks ??? So USAF pilots are what ?there's a course called anger management ??
(PLease excuse me whit my anger when I and many other Chinese on this board. I'm just so angry when some westerners are like "OH We are better BLAH BLAH BLAH ")

No one said anything about the west being better than the East. You place your anger wrongly. In fact, the west has learned many things from the people of the East. Some of my favorite eastern technologies are gunpowder, kites and fireworks. Also I explain to people when asked that I was born in the year of the Horse (as was my Filipina wife) rather than the western style Gemini. There are serveral other things that we in the west have learned from our friends in the east. The ancient stories of Wan Hu and Ke Kung Chi inspired many westerners that aviation could be done.
My comments were merely explaining that a little comment was made in joking typical western style. If everytime a western makes a statement or comment and is seen as being offensive or whatever, why even have this site set up?
Swimmer made a comment (in just) Red Dragon was offended. Swimmer and myself clarified that it was NOT meant as an insult. That is just the way many westerns talk to people we are friendly with. Simply put, it is the way we are. Doesnt make us better or worse, just different.

ja, as said before, "sometimes we take it too offensive".
if SU-27 pilot is from china, he is taking it too offensive. as i said, it's a difference of culture, we are not used to being called some funny names even it's joking. but you explained it well to solve this misunderstanding, and i wish Su-27 pilot would understand it too. otherwise, there is a word in chinese military forum, we call them "FQ". you could use it sometimes...just acuse some chinese guy with a great anger "FQ". it's not a swear word i ensure you.

Those five pilots look like five fighter pilots of any nation's airforce. Proud, professional and happy to be able to fly. I know 5 pilots from any Air Force would look equally happy and excited.
