if they can carry YJ-83 and be data linked, then they might be of some use? they are pretty cheap, if they can take down a frigate or destroyer, then they served their purpose.

Yes, but if the FAC is to commit a long range raid, as possibly spectculated, ASMs and a 2 km gun isn't enough.

I see these ships for patrol and guerilla strikes, rather than to work them with large ships.

Put them with a Sovremennyy? No, not a chance. These are too good to group with something that is a primary target. You want to surround a sov with old Houxin and Houkus. They're expendable and cheap, the new one isn't.

If you absolutely must put them with a larger vessel, do so with an air defense vessel, and let the FAC act as its surface weapons. But the key here is... you won't group them with a larger vessel. Their design and purpose fairly well betrays that right off the bat.

For example - Why put a speedy, stealthy vessel which is decidedly more difficult to see and target right next to something as plodding and unstealthy as a Sovremennyy? A destroyer which is so likely to be among the first vessels destroyed by any CVBG to come anywhere near it?

China does not have the new Udaloy, they have the 51C and DDG 180.......
