Guys I'm in San Diego visiting my grown kids. My daughter graduated from Point Loma HS this past Tuesday. She will be attending the University of California at Berkley. In fact she is starting this summer taking some "AP" courses. I do not know why.
I will post a few pics of my vacation for you...
This past Monday I went to one of my old ships the USS Midway which now serves as the San Diego aircraft carrier musuem...
1) Entrance is abrest deck edge elevator #1
2) My son,Alex, and myself in the Brig!
3) Popeye signing in because I was a crewmember of CVA-41.
4) Dauntless Dive Bomber on the hangar deck.
5) Popeye standing in front of his old work center.

I am humbled by your remarks Jeff..:o Thanks so much!:)
The Midway is so cool the way it is set up. They give you this head set and as you pass by the exhibits you will see a number on the exhibit. You smiply push that number on yopur head set to gather info about the exhibit. Of course Big Daddy Popeye did not really need the head phones. There are also old salts on board to explain things such as the Co & Admrials quaters, Bridge, Firerooms, Plot room., engineering....Also on board they have flight simulators on the hangar deck. There are numerous aircraft on the hangar and flight deck...A-4, A-7, F-3, F-4, F-U, F-18, A-3, F-8, F-14, S-3, E2-C & RA-5C. Heuy, Ch-46, C-2, SH-3 etc..etc....it is awesome:D . We spent over three hours on board.
For some reason the F-18 has the desert paint scheme...It is susposed to be from "Top Gun".... I'm sorry I did not take more pictures..:(
The Midway musuem is the number #2 tourist attracton in San Diego. drawing over 1,000,000 visitors a year...

What a great museum. I thought Intrepid was good but this looks even better.
Great looking family too Popeye. You must be proud of them.
A question I have to ask:
Was that the first time you have been shut in Midway's brig? :D
Cheers

or popeye can come to the NSF fleet base museum that I went to last summer. Unfortunately, all they had were the oldest ship weapons, a few J-6s + ship models of 052s/051B. I did take a lot of those pictures, too bad I don't know where they are now.
My daughter got another scholarship check on graduation day for $8000..Cha ching!!!!

Yes it was...but I know several guys that where in there.
By the way the Midway is now the #1 maritime musuem in the whole world. Over 1,250,000 visitors annually. Even more than the USS Arizona BB-39 memorial in Hawaii.
congratulations! and you have a real beautiful daughter. (not trying to hit on her, I promise, hehe)
Thanks for the complement!... well she has a boyfriend..a goofy lookin' kid. Very nerdy. He goes to college in Boston. I can't remember the name of the school.

Popeye, are your eyebrows really that colour? They look like you put cheap stage makeup on! C'mon, you're not that old really are you! Great pics by the way, I wish I could get over to the States for a grand tour of the preserved ships, but as the seven dwarfs sang, "I owe, I owe, so off to work I go!". If you are ever in this neck of the woods, I'd be happy to give you the grand tour (especially the watering holes, so important for sailors!).

I wish I had the voice of James Earl Jones. I still sound like a teenager.....
"Luke ,search your feelings you know it's true!" " Come join me and we can end this conflict and rule the galaxy as father and son!"
One last thing , when I was on the Midway visiting the other day when I saw that symbol (bomb with wings) still on that door..I felt like crying. I brought back some great memories. I was happy to share them with my son...

Nice pics, Popeye! (Yea, I've skipping on this forum lately :D)
Those are some nice beds in the Midway. Officer's? Those are something I dare to sleep on! The Hornet's "beds" is one thing that I sure would guess that the US would try to blame China on. :D
But what are those giants with clothes? A heat spa of some sort?
Lastly, beautiful Miss Popeye surely is. Now I know who's the beautiful nerd at Cal. ;)
PS. DAM, I WISH THE HORNET AND MIDWAY HAD MAGICALLY SWITCHED PLACES.

Hi Sumdud..First off that's not Mrs Popeye..Don't know who that is..
If you did not notice I did not take the pictures...I got them from someone on another website that just happen to visit the Midway the same time as I...
Those Giamts are just manaquins for demonstration of the exhibit.
I think the pic you are refering to is a clothers press. There is another one of the x-ray table.
As for the beds. Sailors call them racks. Those are enlisted. Accomdations were much more Spartan on the Hornet.

Ok...I see...:o
When I visited the Midway back in June I was surprised to see how clean and well ordered it seem to be. I doubt if should could actually "get underway".
If the Midway was part of almost any other navy in the world she would be still in service. Probaly with an airwing like this;
48 attack/fighters. Hornets, Rafale.
10-12 Merlins/Dauphin/SH-60 ASW/SAR/AEW helos.
And if your a "Good Friend" of the US maybe you will get 4 or 5 E2's..

Is that the Nimitz in the background over at NAS North Island?
The Midway does seem to get a lot of traffic, but think of its location...not to far from the ball park, near the expo center, and a walking distance from the Gas Lamp.

I think the Nimitz was inport at NASNI when I was in San Diego this past June.
The Midway is in an excellent location. Right in Downtown San Diego at the foot of Brodway. Over 1,000,000 visitors a year vist the Midway musuem. Making it the #2 tourist attraction in San Diego behind the San Diego Zoo.
The Midway Musuem is also the second most visited maritime musuem in the World . 2nd only to the USS Arizona Memorial in Peral Harbor Hawaii.
Going to san diego anytime soon? You have to visit the USS Midway..it's simply magic!

Hahahah Fu you probably thought of a James Earl Jones simply because he was in the movie the Hunt for red October and the fact that popeye does have a certain distant physical similarity to the man who did the voice of Darth Vader.......O gawd.... hope this doesn't mean that all future posts I read from popeye will be in that most famous of movie voices.
If anybody has a soundboard now is your big chance, to take Popeyes best posts in this forum and give the appearance are being read by James Earl Jones.
As for the wonderful pictures I enjoyed them immensely. You really do have a good life and family, more power to you.
