The J-9 was said to be a MiG-23/Gripen(?) style fighter plane with the speed the same as the Eagle and it was cancelled I think due to funding or tech trouble, errr w/e I think I'm wrong

It's considered the FC-1 instead, military experts think China will give the FC-1 the J-9 deignation when it's put into production.

No, we are not talking about the FC-1. There was a different plane designated the J-9.

whatever it was, it does look alot like an fc-1. but such a plane would be outdated against modern fighters.

Since it was developed after the original J-8, chances are that such a plane is at least significantly superior to the J-8 and J-8I. A modernized version of the plane with some touch-ups and slightly redesigned and with modern avionics would essentially make a more manuevable J-8II/J-8III. So it would kind of be a halfway between the J-8II and J-10.

exactly what the fc-1 is. but why get j-9 whrn you have j-10, j-11, mkk, and the j-xx soon.

It appears to be larger but less advance than the fc-1, with better performance and payload specs but not as good manuevability. Also probably heavier and more expensive.
Why get the J-8II when you have J-10, J-11, MKK, and the j-xx soon. Just think of today's PLAAF with all J-9s instead of J-8IIs.

You have a point there, what IS the point of the J-8, it's like what is the point of having F-4s in the American AF... oh wait... ALL OF THE RETIRED!

so SAC isn't sitting around.

SAC is not sitting around, they are doing the R&D for Jxx. think it's more because PLAAF can't afford to have all J10s and j11, money wise and also engine wise. still have to import engines for J10s remember. so for upgrading the second line of air units, it's the new most advanced J-8s. and for elite air units then J10s, J11, MK2 etc.

SAC is going to fail at their JXX. I am more confident in CAC, the developers of the J10 but politcally, they lag behind SAC.
Chinese need to award companies based on merit and ability; not on politics. I have the feeling SAC will fail on the JXX project.
J8 is a piece of Crap. J7 (CAC) is much better than J8.

Awesome. Next time you see him, ask him what CAC's plans are for JXX?
And tell us. LOL.

CAC has the upper hand like Sukhoi does really because SAC copied the Su-27 as their lastest and CAC has the Jian-10, sure China imports the engines, but i gotta admit, CAC is better today
WHat happened to Xi'an?

Or CAC as Sukhoi and SAC as Mig. SAC, like Mig dominated in the 50s, 60s, and 70s while CAC took over with the FC-1 and J-10, just like Sukhoi surpassed Mig with the Flanker series.

I agree with FriedRiceNSpice, i wish CAC took over the J-XX
btw, who was in charge of the J-9 again?

whatever happened to Nanchang?
MIGleader

it kinda disapeared, like illyushin, into the backround as more modern planes hit the market.
Chairman Hu

It really wasnt fair though, Ilyushin built refuels and transport, and even a light-bomber, oh well...
What did Nanchang built? and if J-9 was built, how well will it fair against J-8, FC-1 and the J-10?
