I can say with 100% certianty that no other navy in the world can do this;

Do what? Put a measely three ships together and have the world's 10 largest airforce :D ?

Great pics - reminds me that i need have my camera in my truck to snap a picture or two when the rare warship comes and goes from Newport, RI... But on that note, I did not have a camera with me last weekend when old irnosides came out to play in Boston harbor where i was fishing at the time...

For those that are unaware of "Old Ironsides", The USS Constitution is still carried on the Navy Register as a commissioned warship. She is the oldest warship still commissioned and afloat in the world. She even gets the occasional chance to stretch her legs (errr sails)...

Pics of CVN-76, CVN-72, CV-63 battle groups & the USAF...awesome...

U.S. Navy aircraft carriers USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) break away from a 15-ship formation along with ships from the three carrier strike groups to sail independently following the Exercise Valiant Shield photo exercise. Valiant Shield focuses on integrated joint training among U.S. military forces, enabling real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces and in detecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land and cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas. USAF aircraft accompany the formation.

Pacific Ocean (June 22, 2006) - A Standard Missile Three (SM-3) is launched from the guided missile cruiser USS Shiloh (CG 67) during a joint Missile Defense Agency, U.S. Navy ballistic missile flight test. Two minutes later, the SM-3 intercepted a separating ballistic missile threat target, launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii. The test was the seventh intercept, in eight program flight tests, by the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense. The maritime capability is designed to intercept short to medium-range ballistic missile threats in the midcourse phase of flight.

Arliegh Burke class DDG.

Technological advances have improved the capability of modern destroyers culminating in the Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class. Named for the Navy's most famous destroyer squadron combat commander and three-time Chief of Naval Operations, the Arleigh Burke was commissioned July 4, 1991, and was the most powerful surface combatant ever put to sea. Like the larger Ticonderoga-class cruisers, DDG 51's combat systems center around the Aegis combat system and the SPY-lD, multi-function phased array radar. The combination of Aegis, the Vertical Launching System, an advanced anti-submarine warfare system, advanced anti-aircraft missiles and Tomahawk, the Burke-class continues the revolution at sea.

The DDG 51 class incorporates all-steel construction. In 1975, the cruiser USS Belknap (CG 26) collided with USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67). Belknap suffered severe damage and casualties because of her aluminum superstructure. On the basis of that event, the decision was made that all future surface combatants would return to a steel superstructure. And, like most modern U.S. surface combatants, DDG 51 utilizes gas turbine propulsion. These ships replaced the older Charles F. Adams and Farragut-class guided missile destroyers.

Yes it is I the great Popeye..Let's see those ships will probaly be used because of their flight deck space and storage space on board. Because in reality things could get out of hand and some of those evacuees may need to be trnsported to Naples or another city. To be sent back to the US.

Out of hand situation= more evacuees than expected...

20 July..edit The USN needs the amphibs in case the landing craft need to be used to shuttle the evacuees from shore to ship..

US Navy Hospital ships

The USN operates two Mercy class hospital ships. The USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) and USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) each contain 12 fully-equipped operating rooms, a 1,000 bed hospital facility, digital radiological services, a diagnostic and clinical laboratory, a pharmacy, an optometry lab, a cat scan and two oxygen producing plants. Both vessels have a helicopter deck capable of landing large military helicopters, as well as side ports to take on patients at sea.

Both hospital ships are converted San Clemente-class super tankers. Mercy was delivered in 1986 and Comfort in 1987. Normally, the ships are kept in a reduced operating status in Baltimore, Md., and San Diego, Calif., by a small crew of civilian mariners and active duty Navy medical and support personnel. Each ship can be fully activated and crewed within five days.

The ships are among the largest in the USN inventory at 69,000 tons displacement. A lenght of 894 ft and a beam of 105 ft.

The USNS Mercy deployed from it's homeport of Naval Station San Diego CA on 24 April 2006. USNS Mercy is on a five-month deployment during which it will visit areas of South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands where its crew and several health and civic-related organizations will work together to aid in humanitarian assistance and civic efforts. Mercy is uniquely capable of supporting medical and humanitarian assistance needs and is configured with special medical equipment and a robust multi-specialized medical team to provide a range of services ashore as well as aboard the ship. The medical staff is augmented with an assistance crew, many of whom are part of non-governmental organizations, which have significant medical capabilities.

The Mercy made a deployment last year for Tsumani disaster relief effort.

The USN has established a photo web page for this specfic deployment. Currently there are over 400 hi-res pics posted on that site. Here's the link..enjoy the pics...Check the samples in the thumbnails...The fourth pic is of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo congradulating crewmembers.

USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23)

Silverdale, Wash. (Aug. 16, 2006) - The Sea Wolf-class attack submarine USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23) sits moored in the Magnetic Silencing Facility at Naval Base Kitsap Bangor for her first deperming treatment. The deperming process reduces a ships electromagnetic signature as she travels through the water. Jimmy Carter is the third and final submarine of the Sea Wolf-class. A unique feature of the Jimmy Carter is a 100-foot hull extension called the Multi-Mission Platform, which provides enhanced payload capabilities, enabling the submarine to accommodate the advanced technology required to develop and test a new generation of weapons, sensors and undersea vehicles.

There's an idea, the USN used the name Jimmy Carter for a sub so it couldn't be used for a CVN; JC wasn't very popular with the Navy so didn't (in their eyes) deserve the honour of having a CVN named after him as his Administration tried to end CVN production in favour of smaller vessels. Now that members of Congress are trying to force the Navy to name the next CVN USS Gerald Ford perhaps they could quickly name a smaller vessel after him so that the name is no longer available for such an important ship.

You are so right. That's the same reason the USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN 709) name was given to a sub. So Rickover, the father of the nuclear navy, name was not placed on a CVN. It was well know that ADM Rickover absoultly hated carriers and naval avation. And of course that hate was returned in kind. Did you know that ADM. Rickover stopped wearing a uniform in the last 15 years or so of his carreer??..He was assigned to a speical CNO project i.e. Nuclear power.

Dear USN, Please name a LSC or fleet tug after G. Ford!!!! Not CVN-78!

Dear USN, Please name a LSC or fleet tug after G. Ford!!!! Not CVN-78!
An LSC and a fleet tug are useful vessels that are capable of going somewhere, so even they are inappropriate! Does the USN name unpowered barges? Or perhaps they could rename the car park at the Pentagon...

I've seen ADM Rickover in quite a few documentaries and I don't think I've ever seen him in uniform, even in clips from the fifties. Hardly setting a good standard. How about a poll of suitable names? Enterprise would obviously top the list, but the rest can be put forward for the other ships of the class;
Enterprise,
America,
Lexington,
Saratoga,
Yorktown,
Hornet,
you get the drift. I'm open to other suggestions, please feel free to post.

CVN-78 names...This has been a matter of discussion in USN groups in Yahoo many times. Personally these are my favorites. Very similiar to Obi Wan..

CVN-78 should be the "Enterprise class". Period.

Yankee Station
For those of you historically challanged Yankee Station was the area in the Tonkin Gulf where the USN Cv's launched strikes against N. Vietnam and Vietcong targets. This was the longest sustained combat action by CV's in history. 1965-'73. And considering the fact that the USN has only one other ship named after any action during the Vietnam war this is apporiate.

America, Lexington, Saratoga, Coral Sea. ETC. Before the USS John F Kennedy (CV-67) was named in 1963 carriers where named after battles, famous ships or places.(There were some exceptions) I think the USN should return to that.

Fully agreed, there should always be an Enterprise in good old (and afterall, pro-capital) America.

Jimmy Carter being named after a submarine is a perfect fit even if he liked carriers: he also helped with the development of nuclear submarines.

Obi Wan, This is where the phase "Don't mess with Texas" comes from.

"The phrase Don’t Mess with Texas is a slogan for the Texas Department of Transportation, and was developed to reduce littering on Texas roadways used as part of a statewide advertising campaign in 1986. The phrase was prominently shown on road signs on major highways, as well as in television, radio and print advertisements. Owing to the great popularity of the campaign, the slogan has been appropriated by the citizens of Texas for general use. Though it appears on countless items of tourist paraphernalia, the phrase is actually a federally registered trademark; the agency has tried at times to enforce its trademark rights, but has not yet been successful.

Twenty years after its introduction, the success and popularity of Don’t Mess with Texas has earned it a spot among the best advertising slogans ever. Don’t Mess with Texas has been nominated for a plaque on the Madison Avenue Walk of Fame. This is the third year for the contest, and only two slogans per year are honored.

Don’t Mess with Texas is also the official motto of the recently commissioned Virginia-class submarine USS Texas".

Simple but effective!

USN LCS in 'da house!! The USN plans about 50 LCS ships:D

Marinette, Wis. (Sept. 23, 2006) – The nation’s first Littoral Combat Ship, Freedom (LCS 1) – the inaugural ship in an entirely new class of U.S. Navy surface warships – makes a spectacular side launch during her christening at the Marinette Marine shipyard. The agile 377-foot Freedom -- designed and built by a team led by Lockheed Martin -- will help the U.S. Navy defeat growing littoral, or close-to-shore, threats and provide access and dominance in coastal water battle-space. Displacing 3,000 metric tons and with a capability of reaching speeds well over 40 knots, Freedom will be a fast, maneuverable and networked surface combatant with operational flexibility to execute focused missions, such as mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare and humanitarian relief. Maybe this is a really stupid question, but can VLS be reloaded at sea, or do ships have to come back to port to have them reloaded? Same question with the harpon launchers.

No they cannot be reloaded at sea. The ship needs to be inport. The reloading is not that difficult.

No they cannot be reloaded at sea. The ship needs to be inport. The reloading is not that difficult.Actually, until recently, there was a reloading crane that took up three cells for replenishment at sea in the Mk 41 VLS blocks. That's why the capacity for those cells for so long was 61 missiles instead of 64.

For those vessels that still have the reloading crane fitted, it is diffcult, but possible. The missiles would either be heloed in, or brought in alongside, and reloaded with the crane. But the Tomohawks and the new TBMs are too heavy for the crane. Basically, it hasn't been done because the US has not been in any kind of extreme circumstance requiring it and now on the flight IIA Burkes and on later Ticos they added that three extra missile capacity to each Mk 41 and took out the reload crane.

I found the following interesting discussion regardig this on THIS SITE (http://www.fas.org/spp/eprint/np14/np14chp3.htm)

I personally believe it is a mistake because, even in an emergency, it would be nice while at sea, and in the midst of combat operations of that magnitude, to be able to reload, even if it took an extra day or two to get it all done. That would still be better than having to sail all the way back to port.

VLS Capabilities and Limitations: Reload and Loadout. A warship cannot live without fuel, but it cannot fight without ammunition. As weapons systems become increasingly complex and specialized, the ability of a weapons platform to execute a given mission is increasingly tied to its reserves of a specific munition. If the AEGIS CG demonstrates superior endurance for the remote NTW mission, that advantage is squandered if the ship carries an insufficient loadout of NTW interceptors.

If all its SM3 missiles are gone after two days on-station, the CG's superior fuel reserves are rendered irrelevant. Except as a sensor or cueing platform, the ship is useless for NTW and is probably out of position for any of the other missions it is potentially capable of performing. Furthermore, unlike fuel, VLS reloads cannot be provided on station. The ship must leave its patrol area and proceed to port, perhaps taking itself out of the fight entirely.

As originally designed, the Mk41 vertical launching system and its variants have a nominal underway replenishment capability. The practical limits of this capability are sufficiently great that in the late 1980s, the Center for Naval Analyses (CNA) studied a series of possible improvements. The results of that study, driven by the old Soviet regimental raid threat, are still relevant in light of the emerging TBMD mission.

Looking at older ship classes, CNA found that "typical rates for the transfer of large missiles between ships at sea [were] on the order of two to six missiles per hour."64 In regard to VLS, "limited testing of the VLS UNREP system indicates the fleet can expect about 3 missiles per hour as a consistent strike-down rate in calm seas (sea state 3 or less)."

The entire discussion is quite interesting.

Also, check out the following link:

http://www.navy.mil/search/print.asp?story_id=18804&VIRIN=&imagetype=0&page=1

The second to the last paragraph indicates that the Navy continues to look hard at making the at sea replenishment of VLS a reality. Testing in 2006 was supposed to go ahead for reloading Tomohawks (the heaviest) and I am interested in finding out how that went.

I don't know Jeff. I mine eyes view this would put the crew at an unecessary risk.. It just seems to me the ship would need be stationary to accomplish the reload and therefore be a sitting duck. Besides if they fired all 61 missiles or half that many there may not be a need to reload whereas most potential threats may be eliminated.

Besides if they fired all 61 missiles or half that many there may not be a need to reload whereas most potential threats may be eliminated.I agree that in most conditions it is a dangerous thing to do.

I believe they could do it in state 2 conditions...and yes, in most conflicts they would not expend all of their stores...but in a saturation attack against the carrier, they could...and then they would be relatively defenseless anyway so the ability to do it would be less dangerous under those conditions than not being able to do it.

That's why the reload crane was there in the first place because that's what we envisioned with the Soviets and even 2 missiles an hour reload was better than nothing.

Anyhow, I do not believe that saturation threat is completely gone.

You have to say that the Japanese are, and for a long time have been, master ship builders. Their AEGIS destroyers (and the new ones are really just about as big displacement wise as our cruisers) are very, fine looking and capable vessels.

One question, why Admiral Pace didn't salute to Japanese? We all know he saluted to Chinese. What is the general term of this?

szbd, I cannot see your picture. Only a little red x.

I'm sure he did salute the Japanese. In fact I have a picture of him saluting. Perhaps the photographer did not publish the picture or missed that shot. Alos in the two pics below he his passing in review. When he past the Japanese flag I know he saluted it as the flag is (dipped) lowered which is a signal of a returned salute.

I can see my picture fine. But nevermind, it's identical to your first picture. When Gen. Pace was reviewing the Chinese soldiers, he saluted in the whole walk. This caused my question.

Are you getting some of these from the :

Just think, in not too many years, we will be seeing F-35s conducting those flight operations off of the new LHA(R)s for the US Marines and US Navy. That will be exciting.

Love, stealth rout Abu Sayyaf terrorists

By Jim Gomez - The Associated Press
Posted : Sunday Mar 4, 2007 10:25:04 EST

INDANAN, Philippines — Marine Lance Cpl. Steven Valls had used his M-16 in Iraq, but here on the Philippines’ restive Jolo island, he is fighting terrorism with a labor of love — helping paint school buildings and pave a dusty road.

At night, America’s unique battle against al-Qaida-linked militants often turns stealthy. U.S. planes zoom in the sky over Jolo’s thick tropical jungles with cameras that could pick up minute details like a flickering rebel bonfire, said two Filipino security officials who declined to be named, citing policy.

Forbidden from local combat by the Philippine constitution, U.S. troops have embarked on humanitarian work to wean villagers from terrorism and trained its high-tech surveillance equipment to track militants.

The combination has been lethal for the Abu Sayyaf, a small but brutal group that has launched deadly terror attacks across the country.

Philippine troops killed Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani last September and his presumed successor Abu Sulaiman in January in Jolo partly helped by America’s technical backup, according to the two security officials, who had knowledge of the operations.

“When you get number one and number two, obviously, you’re getting the head of the octopus,” Philippine military chief of staff Gen. Hermogenes Esperon said.

“It would have been difficult to accomplish that without the joint activities that we have,” he said, referring to U.S. non-combat assistance to Philippine troops.

A closing ceremony for a two-week humanitarian mission by hundreds of U.S. and Filipino troops Saturday in Jolo’s poor Bato-Bato coastal village in Indanan town showcased the extent of the Americans’ rapport with villagers.

Villagers waved at and cheered on soldiers in a U.S. military convoy like they were movie stars. “Hey Joe, OK Joe,” they yelled. Hundreds of grade school students waved small U.S. and Philippine flags as U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney and Filipino officials arrived.

A Bato-Bato mother of four children, Anang Hadiola, said she did not fear the heavily armed Americans.

“When they meet us, they say, ‘Good morning.’ They’re kind and they’re hard working,” she said.

Valls, the Marine from Delcambre, Louisiana, served as an electrician. He ran power generators to allow fellow Marines from the Okinawa-based 9th Engineering Support Battalion to work on road and school repairs in Bato-Bato.

“I think it’s a good approach,” he said of the U.S. aid work.

“The people seem real nice, always smiling. They seem to like what we’re doing,” he said.

Mortar rounds exploded and gunshots crackled in Indanan’s hinterlands about two weeks ago in what appeared to be a clash between Abu Sayyaf gunmen and Filipino troops, but Valls considered Jolo relatively safer and more promising than Iraq.

He was deployed in Iraq’s volatile Anbar province from February to September last year.

“It’s pretty crazy out there, I don’t know. It’s getting better I hope,” said Valls, taking a break from work. “I think it’s a lot better over here than in Iraq. It’s a lot nicer and not as much danger.”

Another Marine, 1st Sgt. Daryl Cherry from Dover, Delaware, was equally impressed. “I think we’re having the desired effect,” he said.

Indanan’s jungle mountains have been a sanctuary to the Abu Sayyaf and other gunmen for years. They often ambush troops and others on a hillside road, dubbed the “highway of death,” officials say. Nowadays, the gunmen rarely bother Indanan, a town of about 50,000 on Jolo island in Sulu province.

“Madame ambassador, the legacy of the American people here in Sulu are not these projects alone ... it is by giving us again the hope, by showing to us that, indeed, peace is possible,” provincial administrator Don Loong told Kenney at the tightly guarded ceremony.

Such praise for America’s soft counterterrorism approach on Jolo stands in contrast to criticism over U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But the fight against the Abu Sayyaf and the appalling poverty that breeds it is far from over, Loong said.

A study of the intensity of five problems — lack of water, lack of electricity, crushing poverty, widespread sentiments of being a minority and high illiteracy rate — that foster armed conflicts was done on Jolo, Loong said.

“The problem was not that all these problems existed. The five were at its worst on Jolo,” he said.

The first pic is to catch your attention. Those ladies are vieing for Miss Philippines 2007..

Check the gear some of the Filipino soildiers are deploying...

I haven't seen many photos of several F-22s being together at one time. A fascinating aircraft, but still a very rare bird. I'm surprised that the squadron has only 10 aircraft, is the USAF following in the steps of the USN?

Do you have any more of these with several F-22s in one shot?
