Just to give more info, I'm pretty sure that the inboard weapons station is carrying twin Mistral IR AAMs similar in capability to the Stinger family, and designed/made by France.

Thank you for that information planeman, as I did not know about that weapon. However at an Indian forum, a member mentioned that it was the Lahat missile system from Israel.

It's an easy mistake to make but in this case they be wrong. :coffee:

The LAHAT looks different. At any rate this other picture of the same launcher from another angle confirms my ID. It's a twin Mistral launcher http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/Images/main.php?g2_itemId=4001

The following video demonstrates the hovering of the Harrier and take-off of the Sea-king aircraft over the aircraft-carrier Vikrant of the IN. The audio features a patriotic song.
The quality of the video is slightly poor.

Well, the following report about the Dhruv's exhibition at the Farnborough 2006 mentions that the Dhruv shall be fitted with 8 LAHAT missile systems :

"The Army version has eight LAHAT air-to-ground laser homing missiles as well as a radar warning receiver and decoy launcher and Israeli avionics. A GIAT M621 2 mm gun turret can be fitted in place of the H-MOSP sensor pod."

It can carry eight LAHAt - i.e. two quad launchers - but those are still Mistral. LAHAT looks like this: http://www.defense-update.com/images/lahat-quad.jpg - you don't have to start counting on your toes to realise that a twin Mistral launcher is not a quad LAHAT launcher. :nana:

Your assesment about the presence of mistral missiles on the Dhruv appears correct, but the following statements mention a quad mistral system :-

"The Army has also decided to arm the ALH Dhruv with a
quad MBDA Mistral missile pod, a 20 mm
gun from GIAT, rocket pods from FZ
Belgium and with Israeli EW equipment at
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL)."

It maybe possible that a dual-mistral launcher may have been selected. Also, the author of the article posted by me, is Major General (retd) Ashok K Mehta, who is a defence columnist. His article about the Dhruv at Farnborough 2006 does not mention the Mistral, but the LAHAT. Can it be possible that a dual Lahat launcher has been developed ?

The pictures show twin Mistral AAM tubes.

The quad LAHAT may have been on the other side of the aircraft - this picture of it at Paris airshow clearly shows the LAHAT: http://r2singh.tripod.com/paris_air_show/index.album?i=11&s=1

Great pictures Mr Indianfighter! Great!:) Nice to see such a spirit of co-operation between India and the US. And of course India and the PRC.

I'm sure those Indian pilots are highly skilled in landing on an aircraft carrier. You readers have to realize that the ship is moving when the helos come in for a landing. Not an easy task.

The Indian Navy is going to have a strong carrier in the Indian Ocean soon...followed in three or four years first by one, and then two of their own indeginous designs.

What is going to happen to the Virrat? I'm pretty sure it will be scrapped not long after the Vikramaditya comes online, but I'm not sure.
