Could you clarify exactly what you mean by "Gun-launched missile round?"
Does that mean you saw what appears to be a missile shoot out of a barrel of a gun? And it was obviously a missile and not a bullet?
I'd say the only thing stopping something like this would be the size of the missile, I suppose... that and the propulsion. Normally missiles are just rockets that don't require much if any additional force to propel it forward, one thing that distinguishes them from bullets. (Aside from the warhead and homing factor and price tag...)
I suppose that if you could make a missile small enough to fit into a conventional gun barrel it COULD be done, though I can't see how the backwash from the rocket wouldn't damage the gun itself... seems kind of redundant.

i dont really understand the question, are you talking about a infrared seeking or infrared guided missle?

This is how I think it would work-
The missle is fired in a bullet-like casing that falls away after leaving the barrel. The missle's (if you want to call it that. I think it is really more of a rocket, like an RPG only smaller.) engine kicks in about a second or less after that.
If the PLA made one, it is a major step forward (or backward) in infantry weaponry. It would allow every infantryman to have the ability to kill a lightly armoured vehicle or a tank while still carrying a weapon as verstile as a rifle, and not having to carry any specialized launchers or anything like that. It gives the rifleman the ability to shoot another infantryman and then kill a tank with the same weapon.

I am not sure myself. As I was a infantry I dun know that much about tank cannon or it round.
But I was pretty sure I saw a gun-launched missile(tank cannon round) with an IR seeker on it.

So basically it was a round roughly the size of a tank round that had an IR seeker in the nose, but was propelled like a normal round, without rockets? I would think that sort of negates the "smart" seeker, as there are no means to aim it even if you can lock on to a target...
Of course, this is what you saw, not necessarily how it works. It is indeed interesting, though.
do you mean IR seaker on the head or the IR projecting box.
well gun launched ATGM (anti-tank guided missile) looks like a tank round, but it will be boosted by the rocket when fired
something like this page??? http://www.sinodefence.com/army/tank/gun_launched_missile.asp

Yes it kind of like the Gun-launched missle on sino defence, and I have seen this too. But there a one with something which look like a IR seaker on it head. I dun know if it is a test round or something and I dare not ask. Ask i can tell that they where trying push past that place quicky.

the only missle i can think of that looks like youre description is the Shillelagh guided missile used by the M551 sheridan and M60A2. but this missle was guided by an infrared beam projected from the tank so it isn't a heat seeking design.

In WWII, the US distributed a grenade round capable of being fired off the end of a rifle. Maybe this is something like that; an anti tank round that is not guided, but is merely a grenade or rocket.
This thing would definately have to be fired from inside the gun and activate its own rocket afterwards because it would burn the operator otherwise.
