I had a rather odd thought earlyer today, consider this scenario.

Iran (or any other country for that matter) being short on high quality, surface based missile missile defence or attack ships might be able to suprise a potential enemy by rolling some of the truck mounted Shahab 3,Zelzal-1,Naze or C.802 onto anything that can hold it. e.g. large fishing boat, tanker, passanger ferry.

these could be manovered 100's of miles offshore and possibly enter the safe zone around the offshore carrier group.

i visualise a flat top tanker with a few air defence units and maybe a few ballistic missiles sitting on top for good measure.

Do you think this kind of scenario could work ? or can you think of any other non conventional uses of hardware, past or future ?

This tactic will make all Iranian civilian assets becoming a legitmate military target. Now, just what kind of damage do you expect a few truck mounted TBM on oil tanker do to warship?

In addition, unlike on land, where you can use terrian to your advantage, on the high sea, there is simply no where to hide!!

That inexchage for unbounded US military actions on all civlian target is simply not worth it at all. :nono:

Heres a past example:
In WW1 and 2 Germany used merchant ships packed with hidden cannons.
these high sea raiders did alot of damage to allied merchant ships when it encountered them esp in south atlantic and india ocean. These ships were also known to capture allied merchant ships and bring them back to Germany.

Hiding military targets within civilian buildings was a key strategy for Iraq durring GW1 at least, and i think Iran would adopt this same strategy if it means more possibility for negative media reports against the west.

It's is a tactic I would expect Iran to use. No matter how reprehensible it is.
After the first missile is fired from a merchant ship that will be their last. I'm sure that the US would expect iran to use such a tactic.
