Thanks! I guess this is my turn? Then:
Identify the following and its fate:
==Chongqing, ex HMS Aurora, transfered from the British navy to ROC in 1948, defected to communists in February 1949, bombed by nationalists from 17th to 19th of March, and sank on the 20th
Salvaged in 1952, but the Chinese decided not to refurbish and return it to service, so was transfered to civilian use after all equipments were removed, and was scraped in the 80's.

Markedly German influence:D
Scratch
06-09-2007, 09:09 AM
I'd say that's a Martin XB-48.
One participant in the contest for a new medium bomber for the SAC. Around the end of the cold war.
The contest was won by the B-45 and B-47.
Regarding german influence: I think in 1944, the US war department was aware of german advances in jet propulsion for aircraft, especially bombers. So they wanted a design for a medium bomber with sufficient jet power.

Vickers WB-210, prototype of Valiant.
As a sidenote of German influence on XB-48 - the first flight was only 14 June, 1947, meaning that for two years already there was hell of a lot of ex-German wize kids besides Werner von Braun and Walter Dornbeger available/:D
planeman

Can I go for a cheap shot and say that Snake is wrong? Like by a milliscule amount; the correct answer is Vickers Type 660.
...
"WB-210" is the seriel number not the type.
Scratch
06-10-2007, 10:41 AM
Now you both brought me into some trouble. Then again it probably was me saying be precise with the plane. It's indeed the Valiant prototype. But I think the second one already had the fence at the intake removed.
So, WB-210 is even the exact plane, that means snake's answer was right on spot.
planeman
06-10-2007, 12:45 PM
lol, I was only kidding. Knowing the seriel of a plane from a los res picture is pretty damn impressive as always. I thought I was ok for military equipment until I started hanging around here.

I thought it just meant Golly's answer was incomplete ;)
BIS = Russian suffix applied to many military types meaning improved, although technically a corruption of the French (/latin) meaning second (as in; first, second). Could be taken to imply second generation of design. Ie MiG-21Bis was the watershed second genertion of the MiG-21 series.
My posts bore even me sometimes.

Skorzeny, friend, you are too smart! Your turn again!
As a side note the IJN Satsuma was the first BB built in Japan.
IJN Satsuma Class Battleships
The Satsuma class battleships were the first battleships built in Japan. The two sister ships, Satsuma and Aki, were differentiated by the location of their funnels. Aki's third funnel was further apart from her second. Aki was different from her sistership also in terms of machinery. Due to a delay in the construction yards, Aki received turbine engines, one of the first capital ships to gain such.
Both ships had smaller guns than planned, as the original twelve inch guns were replaced with ten inch guns due to shortaes. The Satsuma class ships both received anti-aircraft guns during the First World War. After the war, both ships were disarmed in 1922 with regard to the Washington Naval Treaty. Two years later, the battleships were sunk after performing one last service as targets for their modern replacements.

its the Lockheed Martin RQ-3A DarkStar
Dang!! I thought it would be a tough one..Jeezzzz Oh well you win...I give the win to Skorzeny because he was first and has the most correct answer.
http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=616
A design team from Lockheed Martin, Boeing and DARPA incorporated stealth technology into the Dark Star, enabling it to fly reconnaissance missions in highly defended areas.
The Dark Star was an USAF UAV that just did not do very well. Only four were built.
Dark Star first flew on March 29, 1996 at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., but it crashed during its second flight on April 22, 1996. The second Dark Star, which was modified to increase its stability, first flew on June 29, 1998. During this 44-minute flight, it successfully executed a fully automated flight from takeoff to landing using the Global Positioning System, and it reached an altitude of 5,000 feet. On Jan. 11, 1999, the second Dark Star completed its first high-altitude flight and reached an altitude of 25,000 feet on a 2-hour, 37-minute flight. Two additional Dark Star vehicles were completed, but they never flew. In late January 1999 the Department of Defense terminated the Dark Star UAV program because of budget cuts.

Fooled me with that 565 sign in the back ground..The boat may have been USN orginally ..but in this pic,as I have examined it carefully..it is not a USN sub at the time of this pic..May have been transfered from the USN to another navy....I dunno what it is:confused:

Guess Lima Class sub. Confused by flag, Bulgarian??? - (EDIT: flag looked like old style Bulgarian Ensign but clearly isn't).
EDIT2: Googled it in Russian and am 100% certain my guess was right. I am in disbelief that my 1980s recognition lessons efforts paid off. How on earth have I stored a profile image of an obscure sub in my head all these years when I can't even remember what I had for supper last night???? I surprise even myself :D

Yes, it's Project 1840. Interesting that tactical number is often given as BS-555, although the photo clearly shows 565.
P.S. I'm pissed off. I'm never here when the question is posted.
