I just did a month ago.

An average score to get into a well-off university would be in the 2000 range. I barely made it with 2060.

What do you need to know? I've spent 2 month studying for it, so I can answer some questions.

Most of us college bound kids have. There pretty easy. I cant believe GW got a 1206 and goes to yale.

For me:
Math:800
Verbal: 770
Reading:720(God damn it!! wish they didnt have this section, I never really got time to prepare for it)
total:2290/2400

Since the math covers basic algebra and algebra II, plus a little geometry, it wasnt hard at all. Just take couple practice ones, and your score will rise.

I still consider you luckier, since you didnt have to take the Reading section. Why did the college board have to slap us with a new section in my Junior year??

Just courious, how many of you have taken SAT prep classes (sometimes sponsered by your chinese school)?

Yes, reading is also my weakest area.:p

I didn't took any prep classes.:)

yeah, I remember those days...

My mom is chinese, so she pushed me very hard... I start SAT prep in 10th grade and took again in senior year. My score was i think about 1900. The math part is eaaaaasssy! Reading sucks ass!

The best way to prepare is not to study 2 month before the test, it take years of study to get a good score.

One thing make made is this other asian kid in my high school time got a PERFECT score on SAT! WTF! After that, because I am half asian, everyone in my class expect me to get the same, that pissed me off!

........oh my god...

The Reading section has been around for years.
It is the writing section that was new.
I don't kno where you got your math/verba/reading from... its math/reading/writing.

Are you sure you're talking about the right test?

Holy crap you guys all did a LOT better than I did... my scores actually DECREASED the second time around...

First time : Verbal 700, Math 680

Second time : Verbal 700, Math 640, Writing 620

There was this especially weird question in the new Writing section. They give you some sentences, and tell you to pick out the parts that make the sentences incorrect.

However, in one case I got into a real dilemma. To make a long story short, if the boy had 2 mommies then the sentence would have no grammatical errors. If not, then the sentence was wrong.

I didn't really think that they would have a lesbian family in a nationwide SAT test, so I randomly marked one because I couldn't find anything wrong. It still has be boggled today.

Math: 800
Reading:710
Homosexuality (Writing): 670

Well lets just say those are the Asians who study all their life and does nothing else, when I mean nothing I mean nothing else like.. sports,games,tv,girls.....

So true!

No writing for me.

Man, you guys are lot smarter than me, now i feel bad. MY parents are too nice, so I don't study much.

SAT is the main college entrance exam that high school students must take in the United States. The current tests is divided into three sections, math, reading, and writing, with a maximum score of 800 and a minimal score of 200 on each section, making the maximum score possible on the entire test to be 2400. Previously, until 2004, the test only had two sections, with a possible total of 1600.

The other oft-used college entrance exam in the United States is the ACT, which is structured differently.

So its kind like finnish 'high-student' exam, sort of compination of high-school's final test and entrance exam to universityes.

Yeah, but some colleges don't even care about your SAT score that much. Like I read the schools in CA doesn't care much about your score.
It doesn't test knowledge (stuff you learn in high school) only random stuff mostly reason.
When it really comes down it, it's all about the $$$. If you have $$$ and let's say your parents donate a large sum well lets say you can even get into Harvard.

Our final tests also are not the sole factor to go to universityes, you need go trough entrance exam of that school and division that you are aplying. Thank god we aren't that low that you would get passed solely for money...no matter how rich your parents are...

not quite. no one needs to take the SAT to get a high school degree--it is really just a college entrance exam and not a final exam for high school, even though it sometimes feels like it.

When it really comes down it, it's all about the $$$. If you have $$$ and let's say your parents donate a large sum well lets say you can even get into Harvard.

at the same time, if your dirt poor but get a a 2400 (or close) you can get a free ride (plus some $$$ to spend) at many reputable universities. It's not all about $$$, but rich parents don't hurt.

When i took the SATs (96--sooo long ago) I didn't take a prep class and still did well. It's actually kinda sad that the SATs are so easy to study for--good thing most schools don't weight them too much. I think the most important aspects for a college/uni to look at are class rank (GPA) and all the extracurricular activities. Someone who just studies all the time, get's straight A's and great SATs but has nothing else to offer brings very little to the table in my eyes. Of course this is well known among HS students so everyone has a long list of extracurricular activities to show--oh well.

Man, thinking about that whole applying to college fiasco just makes me happy not to have to deal with it ever again!

oops. what i meant was the writing. I usually call the reading section "verbal", as it tests vocab and analogies too.

Anyhow, im probably going to keep my score and not retest. it goes on your record...:(

Have you guys heard of the myth that this kid got into MIT by getting a perfect 0 on his SAT?
Well supposely getting perfect 0 is harder than getting 2400 because to achieve 0 you have to not only know all of the answers to the questions but also how many and what kind of questions to miss, skip, and get correct...
Smart kid :nana:

xihaoli
03-26-2006, 08:43 PM
How is this possible? Its well known that the SAT have one bluff section per test, that means one of the sections will be omitted. To get a score of 0, he would have to know which section is is omitted, thus making all the other sections (-) to reach the 0 mark.

It is impossible, since the lowest score possible is 200/800 per section, making 600 the lowest possible you can get. It is hard to get the perfect 600 however.

The_Zergling
03-26-2006, 10:31 PM
Yeah, pretty much impossible. Just turning in a blank scoresheet would get you 1200 points, as 400 is the default, getting 200 is only possible if you get each and every single question wrong.

Getting a score of 600 would mean you're either very stupid/unlucky, or extremely smart. If you're so smart that yo got all the problems wrong on purpose to see if that would impress the college you applied to, then you've probably got issues.

Most geniuses do.

xihaoli
03-26-2006, 10:44 PM
Think about it, out of all the questions there is usually one really dumb answer that simply can't be right. It wouldn't be very hard to get a "perfect" 600. The sats are more of a test of technique then smartness, and everyone knows that you can narrow each and every question down to basically two probrable answers.

well this finnish equavalent isent exatly high school final test, and you can thecnically graduate from high-school whit out it, but then again, You cannot enter into the universityes whitout it....Im not sure about other polythecnic schools like the thecnical 'gollege' where Im studying

Your HSC would compare to SAT.

As for SC, there is the CASHEE in California (California High School Exit Exam) that starting this year is required for graduation.

2XX0?!?!?!?!?!
Holy Sh!t you've got to be kidding!

I am taking my SAT on April Fools Day.
I went to Berkeley for my classes n did 3 diagnostics.
It actually helped..........
My current score is about 1750, which is better than my Calculus friends. ( Our session was only 2nd to session 6. Guess you guys belong there.)

Score is about 680/500/565.

Think I am going to take the ACT....

xihaoli
03-28-2006, 02:44 AM
Whats was your SAT, GPA, and E.C when you got into Berkely? I want to go there, but I'll probrably end up in Davis or somehting.....

Finn McCool
03-28-2006, 01:55 PM
I don't know if SATs are all that important. Getting a high score is good, but if the high school wou go to is a good one and if you took Advanced Placement Classes and stuff like that they might overlook a bad score, especially if your really good at a sport.

Oh no, I meant SAT classes taken in Berkeley. I do not know the real requirement for Berkeley, but I doubt it is as high as most people think, especially when compared with UCLA. (I thought Berkeley was more popular, but oh well, better for me.) I have a friend who has many APs, but gradesand I would think, the test, are mediocre. (He came to America in '02 I think.)
Too bad my school lacks AP............

Verbal: 800
Math: 800
Writing: 750

All Sat IIs: 800

Wonder why all top schools have 25% Chinese demographics? Wonder why most universities are opting out of SATs?
