How many have been produced? Seems its like the PLAN equivalent of the P-3C. Does the Y-8 have any surface attack capability like the P-3C? The P-3C can carry MAverick, Haproon, and SLAM-ER missiles in addition to the torpedoes, bouys, etc.

Something over 700 P3s were produced and used by many different countries. Is there an export market for the Y-8 ASW?

The replacement for the P-3C is now being considered, which will be the P-8A Poseidon.

No ... IMO these are completely new-built airframes based on the latest Y-8F-600/Y-9 models !!

If this is actually the long rumoured Y-8GX-6 ASW I don't know but - if not faked - a MAD-boom, a weapons bay and a large search-radar would fit that description.

Thanks. Sounds much more capable and closer and closer to the capabilities of the P-3. Extended range? More weapons? Does to have an anti-surface capability?

Any idea how many have been built...or are planned?

    Looks like a good aircraft.

IMO that's much too early to say, since these are the first photos I know of that pird.

On the third photo the first aircraft in line has no MAD-boom but a radar ... but it isn't a Y-8W ! So what ??? What?

There is something very strange about that last photo, particularly with the aircraft nearest the camera, the rear boom/radome (notably different to the others) does not seem to blend into the rear of the aircraft properly. Also, notice that the two aircraft at the rear of the line (furthest from the camera) have some sort of appendage at the top of the vertical fin.

    That's a AEW version.

    rear housing are for ESMs.

Think of this as a re-fuselaged C-130J for a ASW platform.

That was a airborne battlefield management /jammer, not a asw.

2nd photo, infront of the MLG pylons, see those doors?

doors for weapon bay, sonarbouy in the back.

    you may be right...
that one has a ramped door at rear end , clearly not the ASW version.

So You propose yet another unidentified version or a fake (I don't think so) but it looks really strange since it seeems to have a rear-loading ramp (so could be Y-9) but why that strange rear-facing radome ??

i am glad they finally take ASW seriously. One by one they address their weaknesses This photo combined with the recent photo of Luhu with towed array sonar, mean the formation of blue water navy come to reality.

I guess they have to the most lethal threat facing PLAN is submarine!

    Re: Y-8ASW ... finally !

Hmm I'm not sure guys I'm as excited as the rest of you but the more I stare at the pictures the more they don't look quite right... espicially the second pictures when you look at the bomb bay doors, it's colour and texture almost looks CG.

We'll see I suppose, but I'm wary at the moment..

If they are real, I must say I'm pretty happy with the look of the plane -- MAD, large (and peculiarly shaped) undernose radome, EO turret and most importantly, bomb day doors for torpedos and AShMs. Also is nice that there's two already, and if we're to believe huitong they've been flying this plane's prototype a while now so we might see these birds in service sooner rather than later.
With a good paint scheme this plane can look pretty good. I really hope this isn't a PS and that they build moar moar moar of them O_O

Actually I believe these pictures might be real -- here's a previous pic which huitong believes was the "Y-8Q" (GX6),

You can make out the weirdly shaped radome in that pic present on the ones deino posted... so now I'm very cautiously optimistic these planes are real...

In fact the fence in the above pic correlates with the fence in pictures 2,3 so now I'm even more confident lul.

Thanks ... now I know why I had that strange feeling "I know this bird" !

So these "new" photos must be already quite older ... and as such it would be interesting where are these aircrfat right now.
