WZ-10 is china's first attack helio, so it might not be as good as european or russian or american attack helios, since they have decades more of experience. but they got to start somewhere. PLA probably produce only a limited amount of them, find the problems and start designing a new one. that's what they've been doing for almost everything else, what's going to make this any different?? they want to modernize, and not mass production.

Re: WZ-10 waste of money.

As far as i know, it WAS supposed to be first stealth(y) helicopter. But it got terminated. Something like 38 billion dollars being spent for its development. Way to go, american taxpayers are surely glad to know that.

new wz-10 thread

quote:
WZ-10 Attack Helicopter
The PLA Army Aviation lacks an attack helicopter such as the AH-64 Apache or Mi-28 Havoc. The limited attack helicopter force consists of 30-40 WZ-9s and 8 SA-342L Gazelles, along with 60 Mi-17 Hips with unguided rocket launchers.

The primary mission for the treetop hugging WZ-10 is battlefield interdiction, eliminating the enemy ground fixed and mobile forces, and concurrently certain air combat ability.

Development of a dedicated attack helicopter began in the mid-1990s at the 602 Institute and Changhe Aircraft Industry Company (CHAIC) in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province. The new WZ-10 (Wuzhuang Zhisheng-10) is apparently similar to the South African Rooviak and Italian Agusta A129. The design uses the power plant and transmission derived from the Harbin Z-9, with the fuselage modified to accommodate two pilots.

The helicopter can carry up to 8 ATGMs, or IR-guided short-range AAMs. Although the helicopter might still not be as capable as the U.S. AH-64 Apache, it will probably play a significant role in Army Aviation modernisation and force compabilities.

According to another report, the PLA orignally selected the the MI-35 but chose the Rranco-German Tiger as the source of emulation. Around 1991-92 the PLA leased a single Pakistani AH-1 for technical evaluation.

Future upgrades to the WZ-10 will include sensor package carried on the Z-11 light helicopter that will improve target acquisition. The WZ-10 is equipped with FLIR thus allowing an operations in all weather.

The helicopter's net weight is approximately 5,543 kilograms. The helicopter approximate length is 14.15 meters, is 3.84 meters high, and is roughly 4.25 meters at its widest point.

The WZ-10 is believed to be equipped with flight transmission system from the Z-9. The main rotar consists of 4 blades made up of a compound material. The diameter of the blades is approximately 12 meters length. The WZ-10 has a non-traditional design that uses composite and radar absorbant materials.

The WZ-10 is believed to have two European MTR 390 turboshafts, though concrete information on the system is not entirely clear. The navigation and avionics are probably from domestic sources. The navigation system consists of radioaltimeter, doppler radar and GPS.

Reports indicate that the WZ-10 has an optics system that relays sensor information to the pilots helmets; essentially a system similar to the US Integrated Helmet and Display Sighting System (IHADSS). The helmet system also controls the direction that the machine gun is aiming. This allows the pilots to have an improved situation awareness as they can monitor flight systems and observe the terrain.

Two wings along the fuselage that are roughly 4.32 meters long may carry 1,500 kilograms of munitions, including a 57.0 mm multibarrel rockets, the red arrow anti-tank missile. A 23 mm machine gun is fixed to the cabin at the front of the helicopter.

The fire control system is similar to the French Starry Night digital integration design.

The cabin's bulletproof glass may resist 7.62 millimeter ammunition and composite armor under the cabin resists 12.7 millimeters machine gun fires. The cabin is equipped to maximize fire protection and thw WZ-10 is also outfitted with ejection seats similar to the Ka-50.

The WZ-10 is also equipped with radar warning systems and with systems that will alert the crew that it has been targetted with laser range finders. The helicopter is also equipped with passive countermeasures and in an effort to reduce fratricide is equipped with IFF.

Future upgrades to the WZ-10A will likely include new a radar, fire control systems, infrared exhaust suppression and the ability to be flown from naval vessels.

Re: new wz-10 thread

I agree with what you had said, these photos look nothing like the real WuZuang (armed in Chinese) 10. for one thing I think all these pictures look too much like the American RAH-66 Comanche. We all know the real WZ10 looks nothing like a comanche. The WZ 10 would probably China's first actual attack helicopter. Right now, therre is little solid info on the WZ10

very true. most of the existing wz-10 photos are versions of tigers, rooivalks, alligators, or apaches.

global securities offers some good insight into the program, but cant reveal the truth.

true, then again, this project is quite secret, for one thing the americans are trying to find out the basics behind the WZ10 design. You can see how obssesed they are at spying on other countries. you will find out the truth once that Wz10 becomes operational for then the news would be on (chinese) newspapers, news etc.

Re: new wz-10 thread

it's simply pointless to have so many WZ-10 threads open. As for WZ-10 picture, the one on JDW recently should be a good WZ-10 picture.

Re: Wz-10

To add about RAh-66 i heard that it was intented for army reconnaisance role. Though it does have missiles on it.

The Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche was an advanced U.S. Army military helicopter intended for the armed reconnaissance role, incorporating stealth techniques. Had it entered service, it would have been the first U.S. helicopter specifically designed for the all-weather armed scout mission and the first 'stealth' helicopter, but it was cancelled in February 2004

Re: Wz-10

so far the apache appears rather hard to intergrate into combined arm operations. also the longbow system is a very very expensive equipment, i think most apache units has only 1/3 equiped with it. there is also a problem of relaying data between them as the appoarching path of the apache is usually low and this prevent good secured communication with the rest of the forces.

overall, not as useful as i hope. but it looks good and can provide effective cover support for critical operations; like securing landing site, it can move inland and clear the campers just as the bulk of the force makes landfall. reducing the enemy fire concentration from the lines as they deal with the flanking heli at the same time.

it is like shock troop to me, very deadly when use at the right timing; but can quickly become minchmeat if left in the battle for too long. i wonder if they intended the WZ10 will fit the above role?

True, RAH 66 was built for recon missions but is also an attack helicopter. thats what RAH stands for, Reconnaisance Attack Helicopter

We have no real photos of WZ-10.
No one has an idea.
And even that photo from Janes is too far away to be confirmed.

I do like that CG of WZ-10B though.
It looks so promising.

But we are no talking about RAH-66.

New generation of Chinese-made light helicopter makes its debut
PLA Daily 2005-12-19

At 9:00 on December 14, a Chinese-made light helicopter climbed rapidly in the sky from a training ground of the Army Aviation College. Sometimes it ascended, sometimes it dived, sometimes it made sharp turns, and sometimes it hedge-hopped…After the pilot smoothly accomplished the pre-determined flying demonstrative programs, the helicopter landed steadily on the ground. Flight Commander Fu Yujun told the reporter excitedly: "The success of this flight training means that a new generation of Chinese-made helicopter has made a successful maiden flight." According to sources, a flight regiment under the Army Aviation College who undertook the current flying task has successfully explored over 20 different training methods for this type of helicopter in a rather short period of time, and made over 30 technological innovations. The regiment has developed a set of perfect training system, and has now become the first regiment to grasp the skill to pilot this new type of helicopter.

did they speak about WZ-10 or about WZ-11 Light Utility helicopter ?

Re: Wz-10

The design features of the wz-10 reveal future tactical employment. The chinese have studied the use of attack halicopters in the last 30 years
With the syrian use of the gazzel armed with the HOT ATGM being most significant because of the sucesses against a high quality US style opponant.
Also significant but only to substatiate the existing design is the downing of the apaches in the drive on baghdad of note was that as heavily armored as they are with helocopters often flying low and slow it isn't enough with any increase in protection raises the cost and or decreases the manuverability to an unaceptable level.A cheaper platform would allow a saturation of the battlefield with numerous hovering ATGM platforms rather than fewer flying armored vehicles.Like the impresive US Army capstone concepts the best and in the future posibly only defence against an inbound threat is to not be in the front of the missile but too the enemies rear or flank.A lighter cheaper machine would more easily find the enemies flank or rear and if not by maneuver than by saturation. An amphibious landing against an island featuring a capable armor force would need to be able to disrupt any counter
attacking armor before they engaged the landing team.

Re: Wz-10

by a WZ-10 test pilot?

  有数字地图和GPS/GLONESS导航。
