I think it's pure speculation. The Yak-41/141 project has been canceled since 1992 with no further development. It's highly unlikely that the Russians have working aircraft to export in 2008.

I agree. Only 4 or five aircraft were built. I have no idea where they are or if they were scrapped. I wonder where this speculation starts??. And why..Actually I do know. No offense intended towards anyone.. Rumors start from "fanboy" rumors & speculation. Simple as that.

Re: PLAN interested acquiring Yak-41?

more likely China may be more interest Yak-41 retractable nozzle technology rather than the aircraft itself.
lockheed martin actually uses Yak-41 Vtol data to developed F-35/vtol.
the other such as Yak-141 (?) AWACS,since Carrierborne AWACS is a "must have" for anycountry operating aircraft carrier, there's probably PLAN may seek yakolev bureau for assisstant.

Re: PLAN interested acquiring Yak-41?

Producing the YAK 41 or Even Yak 43 concept for production would give china a big boost too A carrier however there is almost no way the Chinese or the Russians would order production as the Program was ended Almost 20 years ago and because of the limited number built/ the Program it might work better for using the Yak 141 concept data to build a Chinese Or Joint Sino-Russo VTOL fighter. Mind you this is all conjecture. (note I am In no way a FAN BOY for the Chinese Air force.) A Vtol Fighter Program might also become a major Military Cash cow, as if the YAK 141 is the origin of the Program then the fighter would be supersonic, and the only other fighter that can VTOL and Go Supersonic is the F35B Lighting 2 A fighter that although it will be widely exported will only go too US allies. where some other nations who might want too Built a VTOl fighter force will be forced too either Buy used harriers or seeing all these US Allies Packing Supersonic Vtol fighters hid under there bed or get into the US one.
A sino Vtol Supersonic Fighter could enter the market as a Counter F35b too nations like say Iran who might want a Vtol fighter but not One made by the US. it could also be used too allow such nations the opportunity to hit the Seas with small too medium Vtol Carriers (Like the old Russian Keiv class or the new Japanese Hyūga-class helicopter destroyers) a cheaper easer to build option too full sized CATBAR carriers.

A Chinese or Russian Early waning Aircraft would be a must if they truly intend full scale Naval super Carrier Operations some thing like the Yak 44 concept or a modified Version of the SU 80 would fit the bill as helicopter Airborne surveillance and control aircraft are limited in range and power though still effective.
though at the same time this could all be Misinformation or some Study group ( like say members of a Forum on Chinese Air power who make a statement like say that it is technologically possible for them too build such a thing and then start looking into concepts or Some movie or novel plot leak ( Don't forget the number of nuts who jumped on the F/A 37 Talon Navy Stealth Switch blade that turned out too be a Bad Movie mock up) or Fanboy ramblings
