Exactly..Just how big is that plane? Maybe it will be used like a P-3,E-3C or E-3. Does anyone have anymore info????

Re: new AWACS prop variant

Could it be that there are actually two competing concepts: 1st the "Ballance Beam" with a system similar to the Swedish EriEye ... and a 2nd with a disk-like rotodome !!

Maybe after evaluation and competing tests only one will be purchansed ??

Re: new AWACS prop variant

I'like to compare the plane with the Y-8 AWACS carrier, which is based on the Shaanxi Y-8 platform aircraft http://www.sinodefence.com/airforce/...ft/y8awacs.asp

@Deino, yes, may be they compare the KJ-2000/A-50I AWACS programme and the beam-shape electronically steered phased-array (ESA) radar by testing both on the same plane - Shaanxi Y-8C turboprop transport aircraft.
http://www.sinodefence.com/airforce/airlift/y8.asp

It also could become a familiy of suppliment special aircrafts
the Y-8J / SKYMASTER AIRBORNE SURVEILLANCE AIRCRAFT
http://www.sinodefence.com/airforce/...rcraft/y8j.asp
the Y-8 MARITIME PATROL AIRCRAFT
http://www.sinodefence.com/airforce/...raft/y8mpa.asp
the Y-8’s Erieye-like radar
http://www.sinodefence.com/airforce/...ft/y8awacs.asp
and additional the Y-8 AWACs ....

I heard they were going to use Y-7 similar to E-2C. But there is no soild evidence.

perhaps they picked up some tech from the ep-3 that landed on hainan in 2000. then they made a radar and put it on a civilian prop plane.

wait a minute...how do we know if this plane is chinese?

true, we do not know for sure from the pic, but that looks like the nose section of an Il-76 in the foreground. So it's likely russian or chinese.

You cannot pick up tech from an electronic intellience planes and fit it on an AEW/AWACS. Also I don't remember Russia or any other country has a solid nose An-12 being used for AEW/AWCAS purposes. So it may well be Chinese

no, i meant they studied the technology on board the crashed plane and made some equipment out of it. obviously no one would rip the electronics off a crashed plane and put them in another

Re: new AWACS prop variant

Dude, the codes aren't that easy to get.

I think it's just the radome on the KJ-2000 put on top of the Y-8.
As for why the hav 2 designs, competition?
China is probably going to try and squeeze the most capable system onto the smallest plane possible. China do need transports like the Il-76 you know.

Re: new AWACS prop variant

AFAIK, the EP-3 Aries II that emergency landed in '01 did NOT have an radardome on top of it...
Its the P-3 AEW that has an radardome on top of it:

Guys, have you even considered it to be a PS'ed picture?

Re: new AWACS prop variant

yup. the customs service can use awacs to call in f-16s at anytime to shoot down contraband cargo planes. it can call in f-18s to fire harpoons at ships.
