Something is off; looks too clear to be an actual photo. I say someone's 3D rendering of one.

Agreed.

Nice PS..but who ever did that placed gun turrets on the bottom of the aircraft. Unless they retract how's that plane going to land? Also with all those gun tuirrets that's a lot of extra weight. Weight for the turrets, the guns the ammo & the extra fuel to fly that contraption about...

Re: Chinese AC-130?

The underfuselage gun turrets are interesting and feasible if they do not interfere with the landing gear. Although the aircraft has a relatively low ground clearance, this should not be much of a problem, considering the USAF tried a similar arrangement on a B-57G (20mm M61A1 Vulcan in an underfuselage ball turret - project Pave Gat). It would be interesting to see if the PLAAF actually has a requirement for such aircraft.

Interesting, but why would you want underfuselage turrets? You would not be able to engage targets with them while turning / banking, and in a fly by you could just correct the course and use the side mounted guns.
Better to have all guns on one side and optimize weapons and sensors for a certain flight profile.

Re: Chinese AC-130?

there have been some studies into the feasibility of Mounting weapons on the underside of a gunship hull although nothing ever came of them. and this Aircraft consept although cool has one major flaw even with the Y8's Landing gear the ball turrets make landing a major issue. unless the Gear is extended to the enth degree. however Using the Y8 makes some sense it like the American C130 offers open sided hull perfect for cutting into and mounting weapons, however todate the CLosest real Aircraft too this will be those few of the An 12's mounted with the 23mm Cannons. that said no one else other then the US has come up with an aircraft like the AC130 a medium too heavy Air transport retrofitted into a firing platform. the Only other User of such craft were the Columbian who we sold the AC47 too.

the closest non American airborne I can think of ( there I am covered on that) being a variant of the Russian AN 72 the Patrol Aircraft AN72MP which can be fitted with a 23mm gun pod, UB32M rockers under the wings and packing 220lb bombs internally.

Re: Chinese AC-130?

Actually, there are quite a few twin engined transport aircraft available that can be weaponized. CASA 212, PZL 28 Skytruck Plus, IAI Arava, a proposed armed Ilyushin Il-114P and Sukhoi S-80PT to name but a few. These, however, have forward firing weapons, as opposed to the side firing weapons of the US AC-47/119/130 (and proposed AC-27J).
