It's no different today and most Westerners think nothing of China's military except to used to scare Congress into more money for the military. But generally Westerners believe China still has a Korean War era military. Even in other military forums, there are still people who believe that. But even people who don't still are at least three years behind on Chinese hardware. The worst still believe the 052C is fake and doesn't exist. Before the Wen Ho Lee scandal, I'd hear all the time people making statements like, "If China ever got 'the bomb,' they would start World War III." Even Richard Fisher is the last to know. How much info in his reports have been circulating on the internet long before he gives the big reveal to the American public? Even American politicians are ignorant. A couple years ago, a congressional delegation made their first trip to China. They obviously had a primitive view of China because when they returned from their trip, they sounded alarm bells that China was a threat. Why? Not because they were treated unfairly or saw an aggressive display of the military. It was because they visited Beijing and Shanghai and saw how modern it was. What did they expect? People living in straw huts along dirt roads?
that's good if they underestimate China's military. Hide your skill and bide your time.

Talks about the success of a new AAM in November of 2008. It's said to be digital and has ECCM. That doesn't sound too impressive, but this is apparently PL-10 based on this article below, which says that this is an infrared AAM and PL-10 is pretty much the only new generation AAM that uses infrared seeker.

Could this really be it?
The first picture looks a little like its PSed, but it was posted by a pretty reliable source, so I tend to give it more credence.

I think even reliable sources get it wrong sometimes.

The first picture with the J-8 is almost definitely photoshopped I think. The missiles nozzles still retain the blue-ish tone that we've seen in the most well known photo of the PL-10, and the missile on the left wing, if you zoom in on it has a "cut" between the front and back to accomodate for the fact that the wheel is in front of it from the viewer's direction.
there's also the fact that both the missiles seem to be equipped on the plane at the same angle with the exact same markings..
I hope the picture is real but for me it's not that convincing.

The picture of the missiles nozzle is interesting though.

The first pic was seen when the PL-10 speculation first surfaced. I have it in my files dated Jan. 03, 2008. Someone charged it was PSed back then.

If it is a reliable source and it looks photoshopped, it probably is, but the idea the source is conveying is probably real, he or she just didn't have a handy photo on hand.

Hmm, the rear control surfaces of the missiles under the wing in the first photo are forward of the exhaust maybe 75-100mm, much as these controls are on A-Darter. In the second photo, the rear controls are right at the exhaust much as they are on AIM-9X. The shape of the nozzle area bears some resemblance to AIM-9X as well.

I guess this is the first production batch of PL-12. One of those never before seen pictures. Not really sure how many are in there. Looks like they are placed in racks of 3 (one on top and 2 on bottom). I'm guessing around 30.

It might be interesting to compare the R-73's rear nozzles with the pic also, to get a better perspective.

Assuming the red items are radomes, what are the striped antennas running down the axis of the missile (assuming two on the opposite side)? Fuze antennas?

The red bits are protective covers to protect the radome datalink antenna from damage during storage and transportation.

The latest versions of the PL-12 are about that range or better.
